Spending habits

Since I have been talking quite a bit about our home loan, I thought I would discuss what my spending habits are. Well, if I have it, I like to spend it. Isn’t that just like everyone else?
Actually, I am all about saving money. For example, our car insurance will be coming due in June. Instead of automatically renewing the insurance, I will be calling around to compare car insurance rates. We then go with the company that will give us the best rate for the same kind of coverage. Last time we changed car insurance companies, we saved around $300 for a 6 month policy.
We also are very careful with our credit cards. Having rung up a very high bill in the past (when I was in college), I know the pain of not being able to get out of credit card debt. As soon as we were done with school, we paid off the credit card and have never carried a balance since. This is remarkable, since I am a credit card freak. I charge everything, because I do not carry cash. I spend cash crazy like if I have it.
We buy things on credit, but put the money away. If I can get a year financing on anything, I take it. I then put the money in our savings and hide it from ourselves. This way we can earn a little interest on the money. I then pay off that bill right before it is due.
We splurge when we want. If you live a life where you get nothing you want, well, that is not very fun. It sucks. I am all for having a budget and such, but you definitely have to buy things within reason if you really want them. For example, I want the new Nine Inch Nails CD. Since I never buy myself anything, the next time we are at Best Buy I will buy it. Bill wants a big screen TV. However, we both know that doesn’t fall under within reason.
What are your spending habits?
