Birthday Party

Here’s my dilemma with Madison’s birthday — do I make her a cake or order one? I found a cute recipe that I could make her a cake in the shape of a ice cream cone. However, this cake is semi-labor intensive and will take a good amount of my time. My other option is to go to our local grocery store and order her a cake. Last year, I had them do a Tinkerbell Cake and it was super cute. They have pretty much everything to choose from. I stood there for a least 30 minutes last year trying to decide which one to get. They are very detailed cakes too — they don’t miss the gold chains on the cartoon characters or the little things that kids will notice. On the Tinkerbell cake, there was a toy she could play with. It was Tinkerbell and when you rolled it across the table, the wings move. She still plays with it.

Do you make your children’s birthday cakes?

When my kids were younger (under the age of 5) I always made the cake. I had fun doing it, and the actual parties were not as busy as they became once the kids were in school. Suddenly, making the cake was more of a time luxury I couldn’t afford for all the other planning going on.

But truthfully, I look back at the photo albums and I love seeing my homemade cakes in the photos. And my kids marvel at them, as though they can’t believe I a) am that creative and b) I went to all that effort just for a cake (but of course, for them)!

So, if you have the time, and enjoy it, I say, homemade is the way to go. Ice Cream Cake is second, and a wonderful confection at the bakery a very close third!

My kid loves going to the supermarket and picking out her own cake from the book in the bakery section. The only problem I have is, I can’t stand the icing they use on those cakes. I always have to remind myself, this is her cake, and not mine. haha
