Are your kids on summer vacation yet? Mine have been out since June 4th! I’ve allowed them to relax so far this summer, but I do worry about brain drain. They are signed up for summer camp, but I love that the Museum of Science and Industry has a great Summer Brain Games program! We are fans of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and have taken the kids there in the past, so I was happy to check out this program! Research shows that kids can lose one to three months of learning over the summer, and I’d prefer that didn’t happen to my kids!

Summer Brain Games gives you eight weeks of free and fun at-home experiments that can easily be done by kids of all ages (with a little adult supervision). The experiments that they you do are made from common household items. You won’t have to run out and buy a bunch of special supplies. I loved that about these experiments. We did both the hydroponic garden (which we are now waiting to grow something) and the Pinhole Viewer. Here are the supplies we needed for the Pinhole Viewer.

As you can see, I pretty much had to go into my pantry and I had everything. Putting the Pinhole Finder wasn’t all that complicated either.

As you can see, the kids had fun with putting this together. We also got to test it outside.

Can I be honest? I think this was just as much fun for me as it was the kids. And yes, it really did work! I have to admit I as impressed that we were able to build something this easily and have it work. My kids have talked about how they are going to use it all week now.

This looks like a ton of fun, right? You too can register with Summer Brain Games online at and you’ll get a weekly email with tips and resources. You’ll also receive a pass for one free Museum Entry and will be entered into a weekly drawing for a Household membership so you can visit for free all year long! How cool is that?

Since we are such fans of The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and the Summer Brain Games, I have arranged for one lucky winner to win a Family Four Pack (value $76.00) for there! Here’s what you need to do:
