Zoe Saldana plays Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, she is a badass in this film. I mean, she’s an assassin. Those people are not pushovers or wimps. One of the questions I got a lot was how she is in real life. Besides being really nice, she’s a strong woman both on and off stream. I loved that she is all about empowering women.

Now, she is green in this film, so we had to ask her about it:

(Makeup took) 4 1/2 to 5 hours, but then I would come to set and I would look good.

Sometimes I couldn’t put my arms down ‘cause if I started to get warm and sweat then the makeup would melt. Every take they would come and have to tweak it.

As cool as this sounds to turn green, there is a downside to have your entire body made green:

It was green everywhere. Like on the pillow and the tub. My dog was green. It was crazy.

Now, we didn’t ask her, but can you imagine trying to that green out of everything? We also asked her how she got ready for the role of Gamora:

I was like how am I going to make this character different from all the other action characters that I’ve done before. My husband is an artist, and we were meeting with a colleague of his who was sharing with us her latest work. She shot it on 65 frames per second of this Spanish Bull Fighter fighting in front of a Picasso painting and she shoots him in one shot all in slow motion.

I thought that’s Gamora, and she’s a Bull Fighter. She’s not going to be a martial artist. You know she’s not going to land like all the characters and all the action figures. She’s going to be a very graceful sword fighter. I just added those little twists, and then I thought well she’s an orphan. She was taken from her planet. It reminded me of The Lost Boys of Sudan. It’s children that taken and forced into a life of crime and violence and deep, deep down, they are good people. They were meant for greatness and their path was just completely erased before it’s even begun. I thought that’s Gamora, and she’s just trying to give herself a last chance to get out.

I loved hearing about her nephew. Her nephew is a Guardians of The Galaxy fan. She had to impress him.

My nephew was my teacher with Gamora. He said, “Do you even know who you’re playing?”  He told me she was taken from her planet and was forced into a life of crime. I was like, “Yeah she’s bad ass.” He said, “She’s not a bad ass, she’s an assassin but she has a great sense of justice.”  He has a little list.

He also asked “So when I– so can I meet Quill? Who’s playing Quill?”  I said, “His name is Chris Pratt. He comes from this show.” It doesn’t ring a bell. I show him a picture, it doesn’t ring a bell. He goes, “That’s gonna’ be Quill?” He’s seen like all the old pictures of Chris from  Parks and Recreation.  My nephew sees him, and he just stands next to him and goes, “So I’m Jose, what’s your name?” Then he asked “who are you playing? Are you playing Star Lord?”  Chris goes, “Yeah buddy I think I am, you know.  He then turns around and goes, “Yes!” and then Chris said, “Oh my God I got the yes from your nephew.”

Anyway, he was sort of like my little Guru.

I totally loved this story.  You can totally see how grounded she is.  I love that she has family around her that supports her.  I also loved that her nephew really wasn’t starstruck.  He was way more concerned about Marvel portraying Guardians of the Galaxy well.

Now, this movie had a lot of stunts for Gamora.  We asked her how many she did:

50/50. I’m not going to jump the way Gamora jumps. We’re like on the 3rd story and I was suppose to jump, there’s nothing but metal, and she’s on a wire. I’m like, “No, no, no. Let Chloe do it.”

Her name is Chloe (her stunt double), my name is Zoe. She was fabulous. You can actually see her on You Tube. She does a lot of work with staff and she’s an amazing martial artist.  Her kicks are amazing. I knew that Gamora was in good hands.

We then asked her how she picks the roles she plays:

The script, the filmmaker, and the character. My character needs to feel relevant.

I’ve been in those situations where as an individual, as an Artist, as a woman you don’t feel relevant, and it doesn’t feel good.  I spoke to James and I read the script.  I liked the idea of the concept of doing a Marvel movie and working with him. However, I was not that excited about the script from Gamora’s standpoint.  I’m like you, you want me in every scene, but I don’t speak in any of them, so what am I going to do?  I’m just going to go there for 6 months, go through 5 hours of make up every day, 6 days a week, to just be a fly on the wall in every scene and just look at all the guys while they’re cracking jokes?  I was like “No baby that’s not gonna’ happen.  We need to work on this.  This woman, you want her in every scene, if she knows what this orb is, she’s the one that knows who the collector is and she’s the one that ties all these people together then you need to give her a couple of lines every now and then.”

The best part was that James Gunn agreed and the rest is history!  She played Gamora outstandingly.  I love strong women and I have a new appreciation for Zoe Saldana now.

When Madison was in second grade, she struggled in math. It was terrible. It was not that she could not do the math work. She did fine with that. It was the timed tests that were killing us. She is a perfectionist. She does her work slowly. It is literally a battle we have every night doing her homework (and still is). As you can imagine, some nights her homework can take hours. Besides sending her to tutoring after school, I had to do something else. Now, I remember seeing something on tv about getting people (especially kids) to do what you want. You basically need to find their currency. Now, McDonalds is not an everyday food for us. McDonalds is a treat in our house. My kids love the food and love the toys. (Can I tell you how happy they are that McDonalds now has Skylander toys?)

2014-04-13 12.00.43

Madison’s currency was McDonalds. We first gave her the goal of finishing her math timed tests. She did not even need to get 100%. She just needed to finish the test itself. When we started this, Madison was not even finishing half the test. I found math worksheets online and every night when she finished her homework we would practice a timed test. We did this over and over and over again. She would tell me each week how she did on her timed test, and if she finished, we would go to McDonalds on Friday night for dinner. McDonald’s makes food to order, so there is definitely something there for everyone in my family. Once Madison could finish the test consistently, we then worked on getting a 100% on each test. If she got 100% on her timed math test, we then again went to McDonalds for dinner on that Friday. With white meat chicken breast in the Chicken McNuggets and 100% beef in the hamburgers, this made a great reward. Madison favorite part of the Happy Meal (besides the toy of course) is the apples in there! She usually eats them first! All I know, we had some great family dinners, and by the end of second grade, timed tests were no longer our nemesis!

There is nothing better than eating breakfast with the stars from Young & Hungry, the new ABC Family show that is beyond funny. Even better, you actually get to watch the actors on this show eating. You don’t see that on most programming. Plus, the food looks awesome. I wouldn’t mind a few of the recipes at my house! Emily Osment plays Gabi Diamond, a food blogger hired as a personal chef for a tech guru and his fiance. You may remember Emily from Hannah Montana. I got to sit down to breakfast with Emily Osment, Jonathan Sadowski, Rex Lee, Aimee Carrero and the show’s executive producer, David Holden.

2014-07-17 13.03.28

REX LEE

REX LEE

Rex Lee was amazing to talk to. He was funny and totally down to earth. He told us a great story about the “pork chop test”. What this means, is that he wants to know everything about the character he is playing. You figure out how they react to everything and how they would eat a pork chop. If you know how they would eat a pork chop even if that never makes the screen, you’ve got the character down. This just shows what a great work ethic Rex has!

2014-07-17 13.04.45

David Holden was incredibly funny too. Not too surprising, he’s a foodie! He told us we have to try Scandinavian Princess Cakes and that he had a Thai pot pie recipe he was going to send to everybody at my table. You could tell his love for this show.

EMILY OSMENT

Emily was so sweet and so nice. She doesn’t do a lot of cooking herself, but she did tell us that the food we see is edible, and yes, they eat it. They also shoot Young And Hungry in front of a live studio audience on Friday’s. Her aprons are also custom made for her.

AIMEE CARRERO

Aimee is another foodie among us. She told us her recipe for “slutty brownies” and let me tell you, it sounded so good! She also has a passion for youth art education, because that’s where she learned she loved to act. She wants everyone to also have that opportunity.

JONATHAN SADOWSKI

Jonathan Sadowski is from Chicago, so he already scored high in my book. He’s originally from the South side (Bridgeport), so he’s a Chicago White Sox fan. He’s so much more outgoing in real life than the character he plays. He had a broken foot, and he did it like most of us — just walking. He wasn’t doing anything crazy. Amazingly, he didn’t miss any work when he did it! He decided to do this show because it was a “breath of fresh air, full of sincerity and a lot of heart.”

Young & Hungry is a great new show you have to check out so make sure you tune in at 8:00pm ET/PT on ABC Family. Jesse McCartney will be guest starring on tonights episode!
