20 years old from Wilimington, North Carolina
2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division
August 2, 1924 – May 10, 1945

Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class William Halyburton lost his life in Okinawa, Japan when his unit was under heavy fire and he ran, without thought of his own safety, to help a fallen Marine. As he was shielding the Marines body with his own, while administering aid, PhM2 Halyburton was mortally wounded. For his actions on that day he was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor:

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class William David Halyburton, Jr., United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Medical Corpsman with a Marine Rifle Company in the SECOND Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima in the Ryukyu Chain, on 10 May 1945. Undaunted by the deadly accuracy of Japanese counterfire as his unit pushed the attack through a strategically important draw, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Halyburton unhesitatingly dashed across the draw and up the hill into an open fire-swept field where the company advance squad was suddenly pinned down under a terrific concentration of mortar, machinegun and sniper fire with resultant severe casualties. Moving steadily forward despite the enemy’s merciless barrage, he reached the wounded Marine who lay farthest away and was rendering first aid when his patient was struck for the second time by a Japanese bullet. Instantly placing himself in the direct line of fire, he shielded the fallen fighter with his own body and staunchly continued his ministrations although constantly menaced by the slashing fury of shrapnel and bullets falling on all sides. Alert, determined and completely unselfish in his concern for the helpless Marine, he persevered in his efforts until he himself sustained mortal wounds and collapsed, heroically sacrificing himself that his comrade might live. By his outstanding valor and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of tremendous odds, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Halyburton sustained and enhanced the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

He was also honored by with a guided missile frigate, the USS Halyburton, being named after him.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives just so others may get to enjoy freedom. For that I am proud to call them Hero.

My Thoughts, Ideas, and Ramblings - A day in the life of a busy mom . . .

We were huge fans of Q101 and were super ticked off when Merlin Media took it off the air, because seriously, Green Bay Wisconsin has better rock and alternative stations than Chicago. That is sad. We had been listening to The Mixx (which is pop rock stuff) to replace it. Trust me, that’s no replacement.

We were happily surprised that 87.7 fm is now playing alternative music! (Though the problem with the label Alternative is that it isn’t defined all that well. What I consider alternative may not be what you consider alternative). On our trip to Green Bay last weekend, we were happy to be able to listen to some pretty good music till we got out of Illinois. Merlin Media (yes the ones who took Q101 off the air) are the owners of that station. I’m guessing they figured out that their news station they put on 101.1 sucks and consulted their reputation management company who told them to get a rock/alternative station back on the air.

My thoughts so far are pretty good. Right now, we are in a music loop. They seem to play a lot of the same songs over and over and over again. Since the new station is about a week old, I’m willing to give them a little time to grow out their playlist. (Now, supposedly Q101 is now on 1530 AM. However, I’ve tried several times and I can’t find it). I’ve heard everything from Pearl Jam to Live to Nine Inch Nails to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Goyte to Fun.

I am a little hesitant to support Merlin Media. However, they seemed to realize that they made a mistake. Hopefully, they’ll be able to keep this station on the radio. I’m loving that they actually play music instead of a commercial every 30 seconds.

If you are in the Chicago market, check it out!

My Thoughts, Ideas, and Ramblings - A day in the life of a busy mom . . .

Four months. Can you believe it? I have been working the Nutrisystem program for 4 months now.

I’ll be honest, when I started this program, I didn’t have a lot of faith in myself. I have never known the correct way to diet. My high school dieting involved eating as little as possible. I did try in college some of the other weight loss programs out there, but I was never very successful with them. Hence, my need now to lose about 100 lbs. (which is now much less, but I digress).

I had something amazing happen to me last week. Now, I’ve had one of my best friends tell me that if she could afford it, she would try Nutrisystem just due to my results. (You often will see her commenting on my posts here). However, I received a Facebook message last week from a cousin of mine that I see about once a year if I am lucky. She told me that I inspired her, and she joined Nutrisystem because of my success. Wow, is all I can say. I’ll be honest — it still amazes me how my blogging can help others and change their lives. And yes, I got a little teary eyed when she said that.

When I started this, I never expected to inspire anyone. I didn’t expect the lifestyle change and the way I think about food changing. It never dawned on me to order the tilapia instead of the breaded fish and chips. It never dawned on me that my issue with food had more to do with serving size than willpower. I have a friend also named Lisa who inspires me from week to week. We read one another’s blogs to see how we each are doing and comment to help one another along. I also read the comments on my posts, and it really does bring a tear to my eye when I read that I inspire people. Little old me. You all inspire me though with your helpful and loving comments. I’d love to say this is easy. Some days it is. Some days it is incredibly difficult.

I helped coach Madison’s soccer team last Friday. The last half of practice we had a scrimmage against the kids (2 coaches against 8 kids). I ran. That is something that I can tell you that I would not have done 40 lbs heavier. I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Best of all, I was able to get out of bed the next morning. That is such a great feeling.

Now that I’ve bounced all over with this post, onto the important stuff. Here’s this weeks progress:

THIS WEEKS WEIGHT LOSS: 1.2
TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS: 37.8

I always wish it could be more, but I’ll take that! So who inspires you?

Want to lose weight and get healthy on Nutrisystem? Join today by calling 1-888-853-4689 or by visiting http://www.nutrisystem.com/nsblog

They shouldn’t but red koolaid stains something fierce!). There is just so much to do in New York. We are trying to find something affordable yet age appropriate for the kids. We also hope staying with my sister-in-law will save us on eating out the whole time we are there too (that being said, I am still planning on eating out at least once a day. I figure that lunch, most likely, will be eaten while we are out on the go sightseeing).

Any suggestions for our trip? Where must we go and see? Any place we should steer clear of?
