I know that I am not the only one — it's 11 o'clock at night and either myself or one of my kids are sick or it is the weekend and somebody comes down with the plague. It goes without saying, but my kids never get sick when their pediatrician is open. (Though I am one to talk — several weeks ago I got a severe UTI that required a 10 pm urgent care visit.) I know that I am not the only one that this happens too. I also luck out that I work from home (aff), so I can make doctor appointments during the day. However, I know that not everyone is as lucky as me. Also, there is nothing worse than bringing your sick kids into the pediatrician waiting room that you know is covered with germs. I hate that my kids sometimes pick up sickness, because I brought them too the doctor!

That is where American Well comes to the rescue. They are available 24/7 and 365 days a year. With their free app, you will always have a doctor in your pocket. For people who travel, that is especially helpful! (Again, my kids time getting sick at the worst available time. We spend a ton of time in Wisconsin — I live in Illinois — and this makes treating my sick kids a whole lot easier!)

What is American Well? It is a simple and affordable service that lets you see a physician online or by mobile app. All of their doctors are local. They are licensed in your state of residence and the service is as secure as an in-office visit. You can even choose which doctor you will get for your visit.

Your visit is scheduled for 10 minutes. If you need a prescription, it is ready in minutes at the pharmacy of your choice. They are also HIPAA-compliant which means all of your health information will always be safe and available only to you and your doctor. Best of all, you don’t need to feel like you’re cheating on your doctor. All of your physician notes from your visit can be shared with your primary care physician, your pediatrician, or any specialist. In addition, many insurers are beginning to cover these telehealth visits for the same or lesser co-pay than a traditional in-person visit. Since I know you want to try them, use coupon code “SPRING” when you sign up. It is redeemable for a free American Well visit and good for a year if you enroll by end of April!

Signing up is very easy. It took less than 5 minutes. It also asks if you have children, so you can get them signed up under you!

Once you've done that, I recommend putting in all of your allergies, surgeries, medical conditions, etc. You can give your doctor access to everything you've filled in, so you aren't spending your entire visit going over that. Plus, once you've got everything in there, you aren't having to remember it every time you see a doctor with American Well. All of you information is in one place!

The cost of a visit is $49 for a 10-minute consultation. I think that is both competitive and affordable! (My Urgent Care visit was over $300!). You can do your visit when it is convenient for you. This is a service you definitely need to check out!

Is American Well something you can see your family using? When was the most inopportune time that you or your family has gotten sick?

American Well sounds like a great idea! I know I would have liked this and the app when my kids were younger and got sick quite often. Very helpful!

  2. Jennifer B

This is just what we need for those sudden sick days with the kids! I will check them out!

    1. Lisa

      Same thing happens here too!

  3. Rebekah

We don’t own a car so getting to a Dr. isn’t always easy. (We use public transportation.) This would be great to have for those times where the kiddos are sick but don’t necessarily need to go IN to see the dr.

  4. Jessica @EatSleepBe

This is terrific. I hate having to wait at the doctor’s office for an appointment just for them to tll me what I already know. This is so helpful.

  5. Allyson

Wow, what a great idea! Seriously, I can’t believe this wasn’t created long ago! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Deanna Ritz

This happens to us everytime. this weekend matter of fact. We ended up in the ER on easter sunday. 🙁 I will look into this. It sounds like something we might be able to use. Thanks

  7. Michelle

This sounds really great. We always get sick while out of town or late at night at the most inopportune times!

  8. Helene Cohen Bludman

What an excellent concept! It’s great to know that something like this is there if you need it.

  9. My kids always get sick Saturday afternoon when I can’t get them in anywhere affordable (that I trust) until Monday. I’ll check this out, thanks!

  10. Mary W.

It is so expensive to go to the doctor today. And sometimes you have to sit there for hours for something little. I could so use this.

  11. Lara

What a cool concept! I will have to check this out!

  12. Mandi

This is something I haven’t heard about, but it’s pretty neat. My kids usually get sick from the oldest (only one in school) and it goes down the line from oldest to youngest, and then I’m next to get it.

    1. Lisa

      Yep! Sounds very familiar!

  13. This sounds like a great app. I don’t understand how they can thoroughly check you without actually seeing you in person, especially, for ear infections, strep, ect.

  14. We have a ton of these types of urgent care centers here in NJ. Good to hear that they are available in other states as well.

  15. l

This Is The Best Thing Since Atari I Love It Thank You!!

  16. Mel

What a great app. I know plenty of times this would have come in handy!

  17. This sounds perfect now that swimsuit season is almost here – I don’t really need to go see someone to know that I got a yeast infection from sitting in a wet suit (the itch says it all), so it would be nice to be able to just text using the app and go pick up a prescription instead of hauling my (uncomfortable) butt in for some stirrup action at the clinic.

  18. Jenn

Very affordable! A must have for worry-wart moms…ie ALL OF US! 😉

  19. I just used this site for the very first time and I was surprised! It was quick and simple and I got great ‘service’ – the provider I spoke with was very knowledgeable and helpful. I will continue to use this service!

  20. Mellisa

I hate getting sick! Not only do I feel horrible but it costs me around $150 out of pocket each time I walk through the Dr’s door.

  21. Raijean

I could definitely see it as something we could use. It looks fairly easy and straight to the point.

  22. Jen V

That is definitely more affordable than a doctor’s visit or urgent care visit. I will have to look into this.

  23. Robyn

What a cool service! I will be keeping it in mind for those times when we have untimely illness.

  24. Shell Feis

My son always gets sick when a special event is coming up at school that it would break his heart to miss!

  25. Taralyn

Kids always seem to be more sick at night and on the weekends. What a helpful app!

  26. Maria Oller

Oh I need this app with a baby on the way I already losing my mind and I’m the kind of person who listen their kid cough at night and runs to the ER this app might be cheaper

  27. Liz Mays

I didn’t think about when you travel, but that really would be helpful!

  28. Digna D.

What a neat idea! What I love the most about this is the convenience. Price isn’t too bad either, considering what it will cost to see a doctor at an office.

  29. Trisha

This service sounds really interesting and something I would totally utilize. $49 for a 10-minute consultation is very reasonable!

  30. Pam

This looks like a really helpful service! My kids and I always seem to get sick at the worst possible time, and this would be helpful if we were out of town!

  31. nicole dz

Great idea, especially when you travel or are on the go a lot, I tend to get sick when I get very busy, or during the holidays, I love this. And I like that they are are local. very cool and such a relief.

  32. I wonder if this works for every ailment though. Im sure some of them wouldnt be able to be diagnosed virtually. I think it is pretty neat though.

  33. Wendy

Wow! What a great thing! My kids always seem to get sick on Saturday morning!

  34. Amanda

This is so awesome! I’m sure this will help a lot of people that just can’t make it to a hospital.

  35. We live in a rural area, so this could be great for us when the kids get sick and the few doctors near us aren’t open.

  36. Lois Alter Mark

Such a great idea! Why didn’t someone think of this years ago?!

  37. Great time saver. Dressing, packing up and heading to the doc. for simple ailments is such a time drainer.

  38. Shell Feis

I could definitely see myself using that! Anything that saves me a trip to the ER is worth trying.

  39. Enrique Herrera

This is valuable information, I shall definitely forward this to friends and family.

  40. Daniel C

hopefully there will be less deaths in america each year!

  41. This is so nice to have, especially when you need that advice in the middle of the night.

  42. Catherine L.

What a great concept! This would have come in handy when we were having problems with my grandmothers feeding tube. Definitely would have saved us a lot of trips to the ER.

  43. Dawn

This sounds very interesting! This sounds like something I could definitely use.

  44. Mommy2jam

I love this I really need to make the time to check this out. I am ALWAYS getting sick and I would love to save some money.
