Is Nutrisystem A Fad Diet? #NSNation Update – Week 12

A comment I got on my posts is actually inspiring this week's Nutrisystem topic (Thanks Lisa!!!).

One of the more frustrating things when you are on a weight loss journey is when you hit a plateau or when you see all your Facebook friends losing 10 lbs in a week. That's where Lisa comes in with her comment of:

I have lost 25 also but still have much farther to go. Sometimes it is hard to hear the stories of people who lost 20 pounds in three weeks. But I know they are using radical fad diets and I am making a life change. Keep it up!!!

She is totally right too! I see people doing cleanses and all this weird stuff. Yet, as soon as they stop doing that, they gain the weight back. Sometimes more too! Nutrisystem isn't a fad diet though. Instead, they are teaching people like me portion control. I already can see how Nutrisystem is changing my thinking and changing how I eat. We had a super crazy weekend. We had to put Will's new bed in his room, and Madison had a soccer game on Saturday. Needless to say, I didn't eat a whole lot, and I had a ton of calories I could have spent for dinner. (We ended up at Chili's at 7 pm on Saturday night. Let me also add, holding calories till the end of the day is not recommended by Nutrisystem. However, real life does get in the way at times). Now, in the past, I would have ordered the Fried Shrimp, because well, I love fried shrimp. However, I decided to order the Lighter Margarita Chicken. Now, that is still a little over 500 calories, but it was good. I have to admit that I am proud of myself that I did chose the better choice. In the past, I wouldn't have thought twice (though I was wondering how many calories a strawberry margarita was LOL), and I would have have gotten the shrimp. Something else I have noticed with some of the fad diets out there is that they often leave out essential nutrients—sometimes entire food groups! With Nutrisystem, I love that I can eat a chocolate muffin for breakfast, pizza for dinner, and chocolate cake for dessert and still lose weight. I also am able to add in fresh fruits and vegetables. It's part of my daily schedule. (On top of the Nutrisystem food you get, you add powerfuels and smart carbs as part of your meals and snacks. You cut out no food groups — including chocolate. LOL). To be honest, I don't consider Nutrisystem a diet at all. Instead, it is helping me to make a lifestyle change that is making both my family and myself healthier (and thinner just happens to be a great biproduct of that).

On a more personal note, this has been a weird week. We were coming off of Easter, I got sick, and my monthly visitor decided to visit. When I went to Zumba, I had to bring a box of tissues with me!!! Even with all of that going on, I still lost weight. It wasn't the normal 2 (aff) lbs. like I like to see, but I will take the 1 lb! That puts me at 30 lbs in 12 weeks. To be honest, I don't know the last time I was this weight. I think about 10 years ago if not longer!

What are some of the crazy fad diets you've seen out there? If you are losing weight, let us all know in the comments how you are doing, so I can let you know how awesome your journey is too!

We have a friend who has lost like 50 pounds on the pregnancy hormone diet along with only 500 calories a day. He looks good but I seriously do not think he's healthy. Health is the bottom line and you're doing fantastic! You're losing weight and learning healthy habits!!

I had asked my chiropractor about the HCG diet (that's the pregnancy hormone one), and she forbid me from doing it. She definitely did not think it was healthy at all.

And thanks for your kind comments. 🙂

you are really rocking it! I don't know if I would call too many of the diets fad diets. I think the problem people have is that most of these diets/solutions are lifestyle changes. You have to keep up the habits to keep off the weight!

I am not on a fad diet. I am just watching what I eat and working out. Slowly but surely I will get to my goal. I am not in a hurry for it to happen. I have seen results with It Works products. They are body wraps and such and I have seen good results by others as well. Just thought I would share 🙂

That's what losing weight is all about — watching what you eat and working out. 🙂 I wish you well on your journey. 🙂

  4. We're totally on the same schedule this week was weird for me too. But I didn't do as well with it. But worked on making up for it this weekend.

How often do you weigh yourself. I've only been doing it on my weigh in day but after a gain on saturday I check yesterday morning, was back down 2lbs and this morning, down another one…Now I'm torn as I know daily is too much but seeing that straightening myself out was making progress makes it easier to stay focused too…

My official weigh ins are Monday mornings. However, I periodically will check during the week. Yesterday morning I was up a pound, but I know I was retaining some water and I just crossed my fingers for this morning. The odd thing is that I seem to do better the weeks I remember to drink my protein shake everyday. Last week, I think I missed it 2 days in a row. However, if I weigh daily, I drive myself insane, so I had to quit doing that.

I don't believe in those fad diets either. I think they're very harmful to the body. A more natural and gradual weight loss plan is definitely best. Keep up the great work!

I had already tried several fad diets. All I get is this rebound phenomenon that whatever number of pounds I lose, it doubles when I gain weight once I stopped working on a diet for awhile. I think I just lack of motivation to work on fad diets, due to busy schedule working online and selling card printers. Good thing you can keep your desire going. Thanks for sharing!

I've heard of too many fad diets and just the idea of them makes me sick. What you're doing isn't even close. I remember when you ate out and didn't use the Nutrisystem food, so you're learning to change your lifestyle, including adding exercise. Good for you!

  8. I can attest to it, Nutrisystem is not a fad diet. It definitely will help you learn about portion control while getting to eat the foods you really like. Keep up the good work.

  9. Jessi

Congratulations on such awesome progress! Keep it up!

  10. Portion control is totally it for me, as well as exercising daily (which is even harder!) I do love pilates and it changes my body so drastically in a short amount of time that sticking with it is quite rewarding.

    Congratulations on such awesome progress!

Good for you! Glad your plans are happening for you. ESPECIALLY with Easter and pms. That's willpower, my dear.

Weight loss is all about lifestyle change. Meaning, in order for someone to achieve long term success, there has to be a change in diet, exercise habits etc. I think there are a variety of useful programs but I don't think that any "fad" diet per se can effect the kind of permanent results we all are looking for. Congrats by the way!

keep up the great work. cleanses scare me too.

Good for you! Glad your plans are happening for you. ESPECIALLY with Easter and pms. That’s willpower, my dear.
