Osama bin Laden Dead — Now What?

“Tonight we give thanks to the men who carried out this mission. They exemplified the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.”- President Obama

I'm not celebrating. How do you celebrate the death of any person? However, I'm not shedding a tear for somebody who masterminded the killing of 3000 Americans. What are your thoughts? And how do you explain this to our kids?

(On a side note, I have to complain about the posts and the comments still complaining about Obama. Sigh. I guess nothing he does will EVER be good enough for some people).

Side note #2: The Bush's statement:

“Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al Qaeda network that attacked America on September 11, 2001. I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude. This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.”

Side note #3: As for retaliation: The extremists don't need excuses to do their evil; we are the infidel, that's all that matters.

Side note #4: May 1st 1945 Hitler confirmed dead… May 1st 2011 Bin Laden confirmed dead…

Side note #5: I'll be heading out to get an American flag tomorrow.

    It's probably a little easier than many for us to explain it to our kids. They know that their dad just got back from Afghanistan, where the Taliban, not the Afghan Army, was the "bad guys". The oldest had brought home a library book in the fall that included 9.11, so he also knew that al-Qaeda was responsible for that attack, and that al-Qaeda in turn is responsible for the Taliban. A bit simplistic, yes, but he's only 7.

    The 5-year-old, though, was confused, particularly because we'd just had a discussion last week about how God gets to decide who lives and dies. I explained that sometimes God will work through people here on Earth. The 5-year-old probably still is confused, but it was the best I could do at the moment.
