As many of you know, we love Inside Out here at my house! What could ever make it better? The Riley's First Date short that is an exclusive bonus feature on the October 13 Digital HD release and the November 3 (aff) Blu-ray releases of Inside Out! (That's today — go get your copy!) Riley's First Date is about Mom and Dad's emotions when they find themselves forced to deal with Riley going on her first date. It is amazingly funny.
As a mom to an 11 year old girl, this hits a little too close to home (aff) for me! This short was so great, because it really did hit the nail on the head.
Recognize that background? After getting to check out the kitchen, I also got to interview both Dad (Kyle MacLachlan) and Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) about Inside Out and Riley's First Date.
Kyle plays Riley's dad. He felt that he was a lot like his character: “I like to think of myself as pretty patient, calm, and relaxed.” We informed Kyle that there was a poll done about dads and his character is the Number One Hottest Disney Dad. We asked if he had a statement about that to which he replied, “That’s pretty good. It’s all about the mustache, I think. I mean when it comes down to it, I wish I could grow one! I’ll reign for a couple more weeks and then someone, of course, will knock me off from first.” As you can see, he's got a pretty good sense of humor, so of course we had to ask about ACDC. Once you've seen Riley's First Date, you'll understand why (though that image up above is a huge hint.). His response may surprise you: “While I do love ACDC , my heart belongs to Zeppelin.” I'd like to cue Stairway to Heaven right now.
Kaitlyn was 11 when she started on this film. The interesting thing we learned was that over the years her voice did change, and by the end of the film, she had to alter her voice to be a little more high pitched. I didn't realize girls voices changed too! The other cool thing is that when she was initially hired she was a “scratch” voice. That basically means she's the fill in till somebody gets hired to do the voice. They loved her so much that they hired her! Kaitlyn also felt she was a lot like her character too. Surprisingly, she hasn't had her first date yet!
We did ask if working on this movie changed their perspective on emotions and how they viewed them. Kaitlyn told us that “the concept of it definitely gets inside your head especially after watching it. It is like, oh, Joy (aff) must be at the controls now, and it sort of gets into the way you think about your own thoughts.” Kyle said, “that was true also in speaking with Kalum, my son, about it. He would begin to refer to my anger side, so, he would recognize the emotion obviously, identify with it, and be able to discern who was sort of guiding his attitude at the time.”
I loved that both Kyle and Kaitlyn both felt like they were really, really good in Goofball Island! I mean, who isn't? Though my favorite answer of the day had to be when we asked them which emotion they liked the best. Kaitlyn's answer was:
I’m going to have to go with Anger, because he has hilarious facial expressions. Plus the fact that he explodes and you make s’mores off of him.
I will never get that image out of my head!
This was such a great short and such a fun interview! Anything else we should have asked?
