I thought religion taught understanding and tolerance

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

I actually saw this video over at Antibarbie, and it ticked me off to the point that I needed to write a post about it. Let me start off by stating that I am a Catholic. The video is about a family who moved to what they thought was a great small town. However, it turns out the town wasn’t as great as it was made out to be. The family is atheist and the town had a problem with that and pretty much ganged up on the girl. Both kids and teachers at school made of fun of her and talked behind her back. The part that floored me was that the school allowed prayer before and after practice and games. Don’t believe it? The video shows video of it.  (Just to add – I hope that this family wins.)

As I said, I am Catholic, and I would have a problem with my kids participating in something like that. Not all kids are Christian, and I understand that. I live in an area that we have a ton of different religions and that would not go over well (yes, my school district is the one that made national news, because they canceled all holiday parties. They did get reinstated after much protest). I understand that kids can be mean, but the fact that adults took part in ostracizing this poor girl makes me even angrier. In a way though, it doesn’t surprise me.

A while back, it was brought to my attention that the book Parenting Beyond Belief: On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion needed help with promotion, because bookstores wouldn’t carry it.  I don’t get it.  To me, this seems to break some of our basic freedoms.  If you aren’t an atheist, why do you care if your local bookstore carries this book or not?  I know I don’t.

Maybe I am too open minded.  I want my children to grow up knowing that there is more that just being Catholic and that others believe different things.  That isn’t good or bad; it is just different.  I don’t want them going to school and being taught religion (that’s for their mom and dad to do).  I don’t want them being involved in group prayer and making others feel like outsiders.  I want adults to be able to go to their local bookstore and get a book that will help them to raise their children.

My religion teaches me to be good to others last I checked, and it seems that some people have forgotten that.

Cartoon Doll Emporium

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

In a world where webkinz are a hit with the tween girls, Cartoon Doll Emporium fits in quite well. Playing with dolls has now gone virtual. Cartoon Emporium has over 750 dolls that you can dress up. They even have a Hannah Montana doll. There are also galleries, contest, and a chat forum too. On the forums, you can buy and sell items with virtual money, get jobs, etc. The best part is that you do not have to pay to participate.

There is even a little fun for us adults. I personally like this one (Johnny Depp):

They even have Marilyn Manson:

I have to go get them dressed now. Go check it out and have some fun.

Little House on the Prairie

Monday, May 7th, 2007

Do you remember the “Little House” series about Laura Ingalls Wilder? April marked the 75th anniversary of first publication of “Little House in the Big Woods”. Did you know that the series of Little House books has sold more than 41 million copies in the Unites States and has been translated into more than 40 languages. The house that she wrote her books in is still standing in Mansfield, MO. Laura was already famous in her lifetime, and her home was preserved as a museum shortly after her death in 1957 at age 90. Amazingly, her house averages about 40,000 visitors a year. Here are some scary numbers. Almanzo and Laura bought the farm in 1894 for $400. I can only imagine its worth now.

I still have all my Little House books. Even though they are not in great shape, I hope to pass them on to my kids. It is a great read for both kids and adults.

Kindergartner arrested for tantrum

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Yes, you read that correctly. I just saw the article over at Slate.com. Not only was the 6 YEAR OLD arrested, she was charged with a felony and 2 misdemeanors. WTF? Sorry, but this upsets me to a degree. I have a 3 year old. I cannot control when she decides she is going to have a tantrum. A six year is only going to be slightly better. Of all the adults involved in this situation, I cannot believe not one had the common sense to deal with the situation instead of calling the police.

If you read the comments, you can tell who has kids and who doesn’t. Still THE KID IS ONLY SIX!!!

30 weeks pregnant

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Your baby’s a bit more than 15 1/2 inches long now, and she weighs almost 3 pounds. A pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds her, but that volume will decrease as she gets bigger and fills out your uterus. Her eyes open and close, she’s able to distinguish between light and dark, and she can even follow a light source back and forth. Once she’s born, she’ll keep her eyes closed for a good part of the day. When she does open them, she’ll respond to changes in light but will have a visual acuity of only 20/400 — which means she can only make out objects a few inches from her face. (“Normal” vision in adults is 20/20.)
