More and more recipes

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Right now, I am trying to figure out what to make for dinner tonight. I would consider myself a beginner cook, since most of my specialties come out of a box (who doesn’t like Hamburger Helper!). That’s why when I come across blogs like My Recipes Blog I am in seventh heaven. I need simple directions that I can’t mess up. I am usually trying to deal with (fight with?) two kids and cook at the same time. It isn’t a good combination. However, if the recipe is simple and to the point, it makes it hard for me to miss something. I like the 4 to 5 step directions. I also love that these recipes actually include ingredients I have around the house. Nothing is more annoying than when you have to run to the store for one weird ingredient that you will never use again. You can also search by categories on the recipes. If you are looking for a recipe using apricots, all you have to do is click apricots on the sidebar and you have your recipe choices. I swear, you can’t make it any easier than that. Lastly, the pictures next to the recipes also look delicious and make me want to try those recipes.  If you are like me and need to figure out what to make for dinner tonight, take a peek at My Recipes Blog.

Go Red

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Did you know that heart disease is the #1 killer of men and women? However, it can be prevented. Campbells is teaming up with the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women this year. This year Toni Braxton has also joined the movement and wants YOU to pick what dress she should wear to kick off American Heart Month (Campbell’s is also donating one dollar for each vote and you can vote every day!).  There are some great choices. Voting is super easy and you too can help raise awareness of this killer disease by also adding this widget to your blog!  Just remember — Vote with you heart!

Mark Cuban: More Than Meets The Eye

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Honestly, I did not know what to expect when I went to see Mark Cuban as the closing speaker at BlogWorld. Before this, I did not know too much about the man. I remember him on a reality show several years ago, and I wasn’t impressed. I did know that he owned the Mavericks and that he was on Dancing With The Stars. I also did know that I wouldn’t mind having access to the man’s checking account.  He has a bid in buy the Chicago Cubs too (and of all the choices, I think he would be the best).

What did I learn?  Mark Cuban owns a entertainment company, and he is also a blogger.  He also is a very smart man with some very strong opinions.  His opinion is that one should not monetize their blog.  However, he didn’t act all high and mighty about it.  He honestly answered everyone’s questions.  As you can tell,

quite a few people were there to listen to him.  These pictures don’t show all the people who were standing at the wall with me.  He had some great insights and seemed really down to earth.  He talked about some of the people he doesn’t care for, the mistakes he has made, etc.

After his talk was over, I actually got to shake his hand.  It was pretty cool!

Personalized books

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Do want a great present for a child that you never know what to get? I think I found the perfect gift: personalized childrens books. I just ordered one of these books for Madison, and I love it. I am still deciding whether or not to give it to her now or wait till Christmas or wait till her birthday in January. I had to give them a little information about her like her name, age, and where we live. They took that information and made it into a story about Sesame Street and her. I already know that she is going to love a story about her.

I was amazed over how many different types of books that you can have made with them. I have a baptism coming up for one of my friend’s twins, and I am thinking about getting the kids a book for it. They have Christian, Sesame Street, Marvel, and Fantastic Four ones just to make a few. There are 7 pages of choices. You can spend all day just deciding which book to get!

Something else I just noticed when I was checking out their site was that you can set up a call for Santa to call your kids. How cool! I am not sure that Madison is old enough yet to really get the whole Santa thing, so I may not do it this year.

Breast Is Best . . . Or is it?

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

The other most common question I seem to get asked since I have had Will is whether or not I am breastfeeding. Well, here’s the story of both Madison and Will on this topic.

Madison’s Breastfeeding tale

Madison would never latch on. I met with lactation consultants and everything, and she would not latch on. We had decided that breastfeeding was the way to go. We continued to try and breastfeed when we brought her home. However, she started to become very jaundice. When we brought her in the doctor, we had a blood test done, and her billyrubin (sp?) count was 14.7. Once that number hits 15, they have to have a billy blanket. I was given 3 choices: keep trying to breastfeed and she’d probably end up in the hospital, give her formula, or go buy a breast pump.

We did the later of the three. I ended up pumping for 4 months with her. I quit when I started resenting pumping. I have to think it works, because Madison hardly ever gets sick. She never has had an ear infection. She’s had a few colds and the flu, but that’s it.

Will’s Breastfeeding tale

Well, we are running into some of the same problems with Will. Once we get him latched on, he will eat. However, we have had major problems getting him to latch. Last Sunday, we made the decision after trying to get him to latch for an hour and half at 3 am, that this is not working. I would literally feel myself tense up when I had to feed him, since we were having some many problems. Needless to say, we decided that I should again pump. He will get all the benefits of breast milk, and somebody other than me can feed him. Again, not a perfect solution, but it is the best we can come up with. He also started becoming jaundice, but when we brought him in last Monday, it was already going away.

Where do we go from here?

Honestly, I don’t know. I am not sure if I can do this for 4 months again. However, I have been pumping and freezing what I can. For those of you who have pumped before, how much should I be freezing in each bag? I have been only doing 2 oz in each bag. I do know once you thaw it, you have to use it, so my theory was to do small amounts. However, I now have a ton of bags in my freezer.

Let me know your thoughts!
