Be Mindful, Be Patient, Be Careful
In this holiday weekend, those are three things to remember. I had some crazy events happy this week that really cemented these three things also.
The other morning I dropped Madison off at school (which I do every morning). It was storming pretty bad. I was waiting to turn right at the traffic lights (where there is a no turn on red sign). The light turned green. However, that is when something different happened. Instead of waiting on the corner (which is what they are suppose to do), the kindergartener started crossing the street right in front of me. The crossing guard started yelling at her which made her freeze where she was (still not a great situation because now she was standing in the middle of the road). The crossing guard finally got her across the street. It was pretty scary just because it happened so quickly, and I know how bad it could have been. Since it was storming, I personally was taking it extra slow and I was paying even more attention to my surroundings. I saw immediately that she was going to cross the street even though I had the green. It could have ended very very badly — I just was the right place, at the right time, and paying attention.
Another thing I’ve learned this week (I’ve actually known this) is to work together. When Bill works crazy hours, I’ll be honest, we butt heads sometimes (and I swear it has nothing to do with me being stubborn). The last couple of weeks though we have been making a point to work as a team helping one another instead of doing things ourselves and being resentful. It’s amazing how much more harmonious life can be when you aren’t working against someone be it when you are putting together cheap bunk beds for kids or loading the dishwasher. We even were able to work together getting the yard ready for Will’s birthday party next weekend (though every year it rains, so I don’t know we are bothering. LOL It’s like putting together a bunk bed with futon in one of my kids room. Something we don’t need but could come in handy).
Most importantly, be safe this weekend. Holiday weekends for some reason brings out the stupid in people. They do things they normally wouldn’t do like buying a bunk bed mattress when you have a twin bed or drinking and driving. I just hear on the news here in Chicago about all the accidents and stuff, and I’d love to see all that bad stuff not happen.

Kitchen Do Over
For those who have been to my place, you all love the size of my kitchen. I will agree; it is big. However, my kitchen is set up terribly. I wish it would be as easy as refacing my cupboards to solve the problems in there. However, it is not that easy. The first thing I hate is the color of the cabinets. They are a dark wood. We personally are an “oak” family, and it just doesn’t go with our style. My second issue is that my cabinets are tiny. By looking at them, you would never guess. However, the way they are set up, is really crazy. To put plates in the cabinet, you have to turn them sideways. Let me tell you, that is royal pain when you are trying to empy the dishwasher.
I often wondered if we would be better off installing some kitchen islands or even some kitchen island carts. My only worry with a cart is that because it is not anchored to the floor that it would become a new playtoy for my kids. However, it does have the advantage that it can be moved when the kids are playing in the kitchen. My kitchen is big enough that I do not have to worry about space in there. I wouldn’t even mind getting a butcher block kitchen island. I think with little ones the butcher block counter would probably hold up better. Plus, my hubby loves wood and has often showed me butcher block counter tops (our laminate counter top now sucks. That is about as nice as I can put it. It is white and stained and just ugly).
From the research I have done, even doing a simple remodel like this can definitely add more value to your house. With the economic climate the way it is, we need all the help we can get to add value to our homes. Let me know what cool things you have done in your kitchens!

The Walker and The Cupboards
The little boy is now walking a little more. I think we have a total of 8 steps in a row now. He’s only ten months, so I think that is pretty darn good. I have to laugh though — I just saw an infomercial about those alarm system monitoring things that you put on your cupboards so you know your kids are playing in there. I guess my question is how do you not know that they are in there. The only cupboards Will can get at have pots and pans in it. It isn’t like he’s exactly quiet when playing in there! (Though, he did figure out how to get the dishwasher open yesterday. I am not sure if Bill just didn’t close it tight or what). Now, a system on my back door, is something I can go for. It is too easy for the kids (specifically Madison) to sneak out the back door.
