The Day I Met Josh Harris

Now, that you have read about the worst week ever I have to tell you about the best day ever.  Yes, you heard me – BEST DAY EVER.

The day started off like any other except Bill got tickets for the Chicago White Sox.  Sometimes his job has some nice perks like when supplies give us tickets to games.  Normally, Bill just gets invited to go with others.  Last night, he was given four tickets.  Since he couldn’t find anybody business wise available, I got to go (yeah!).  He also took his brother and his friend:

What we didn’t realize was that these tickets allowed us into the Jim Beam Club.  If you’ve never been there, it is awesome.  Free alcohol, free food.  Oh yeah, and we had a pesky 2.5 hr rain delay.  In the club though, we stayed dry.  Our seats were covered and the club itself is like a high end sports bar.  Sooooo, during the delay I swore the Josh Harris walked by.  I told Bill who agreed.  And this is where the fun begins.

I normally don’t get star struck.  I’m from Green Bay.  We see Packer players in the bars.  Heck, I’ve even shook Mark Cuban’s hand.  I’ve met Carson Kressley.  Wasn’t nervous for any of them.  Josh Harris walks by and I thought I was going to throw up.  Seriously.

First, I had everybody at my table giving me crap.  They told me to go up and talk to him.  However, I didn’t want to be a jerk.  I didn’t want to bother him.  Plus, I was just too damn nervous to do it.  Then I posted to Twitter and Facebook that I saw Josh Harris.  Then the ribbing to go talk to him started there.

Fate intervened though.  My friend Anne from Green Bay texted that Green Bay was flooding and asked if my parents were okay.  I went into the lobby and called my sister to make sure everything was good.  While I was talking to her, Josh Harris walked by.  (Now, I just realized that not all of you may know who Josh Harris even is.  Let me start by saying the Bill and I are huge fans of Deadliest Catch on Discovery.  HUGE FANS!  I even got to interview the Hillstrand brothers a year or so ago.  Josh Harris is the son of Phil Harris.  Phil Harris was the captain of the Cornelia Marie on Deadliest Catch.  I say was because a couple of months ago Phil Harris died.  The Discovery cameras were there to capture it all, and it is slowly playing out before our eyes on Tuesday evenings).  Now, I knew it was do or die time.

I hung up with my sister (who told me that everybody was okay) and got my guts up.  I walked up to him and told him that I was a huge fan of the show and that I was so sorry about his dad.  He got up and gave me a hug.  (I died and went to heaven.  I wish it wasn’t like 100% humidity last night because I may not have showered today but I was too damn hot and sweaty).  There was another really nice lady standing close who asked if I had a camera.  I said yes and pulled out my phone.  Here’s what she took:

Granted, it’s not the best picture (especially since I have to wear my glasses cuz of the damn pink eye!).  However, he touched me!  LOL

Seriously, Josh Harris has to be one of the nicest people I’ve met.  I could easily sit down again with him and talk.  After the picture was taken, he was like where did you get that phone (I have an EVO).  He has Sprint too, and I told him how to get one for himself.  :)  Hey Sprint — Hook a buddy up — Give Josh Harris one of your EVOs!  He was just so super cool and normal to talk to.  He said he comes to Chicago a lot and told us some background stuff on the show.  The other thing that impressed me was that anybody who wanted a picture — he stopped what he was doing and did it.  He talked to everybody.  He thanked the people who told him they were sorry about his dad.  OH yeah, and I told him I was a blogger and that I was going to put his picture of us up.  He was totally cool with it!  He told me I could use it anywhere I wanted.  :)

Josh Harris is a class act.  I hope I see him again if he comes back to Chicago (Hey, call me up Josh if you are here again!).  I could only wish that all reality stars where as nice and down to Earth as he was.

I’d love to know though — who is a fan of Deadliest Catch?  Would you have said hi to Josh?

It seems like fate

As I wrote in my other post, my cousin recently died.  My cousin was beautician and had been doing my mother’s hair for the last 33 years.  She really needed a perm, however, she was waiting for my cousin to get better.  Obviously, that did not happen.  My mom made an appointment at the same place that I had my hair done at for my wedding.  We had great service at that time, and she remembered that it seem like an older person place.  They put her with a wonderful woman named Michelle.

You know how you get to talking to the beautician doing your hair?  Well, my mom and Michelle started talking.  They talked about how they both grew up on farms — her in DePere, my mom in Suring (now Suring is an hour north of Green Bay and has about 500 people living there).  When my mom said Suring, Michelle was like I know somebody from there.  My mom was like “Oh really!  Who?”  Michelle said “Well her mom’s name started with a B.  I think it was Beulah.”  Well, Beulah was my aunt.  She died several years ago of ovarian cancer.  The person she knew was my cousin Carmen.  Carmen died 12 years ago.  She was 6 months pregnant and in the hospital for kidney infection.  She had a brain anerism and died instantly.  She was a first grade teacher at the time.  Honestly, it was the sadest funeral I have ever went too.  Not only was my family shook up, there were all these little kids there who understood to varying degrees what was going on.  Well, Michelle’s daughter had Carmen as a teacher.  The school put a memorial bench in Carmen’s honor.  Michelle was the one who collected the money to get that done.

Now, Green Bay isn’t a small town, so for my mom to run into this lady is just well odd.  I am glad she met her.  It was like it was meant to be.  When she was telling this story, I felt like I should be sitting in some home theater seating and eating popcorn, because this whole situation feels like it came out a movie.

Ever have something like this happen to you?
