Sgt. Anton J. Hiett
25 years old from Mount Airy, North Carolina
391st Engineer Battalion, Army Reserve
March 12, 2006

Misty Hiett, the widow of Sgt. Anton Hiett, said in an interview that he, Sgt. Hiett, asked to transfer to the 391st Engineering Battalion when it looked like his reserve unit would not be deployed.
Sgt. Hiett was a truck driver who joined the military right out of high school because he “wanted to go help out” during the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. After his transfer to the 391st, he was deployed to Afghanistan on April 22, 2005.
On March 12, 2006, Sgt. Hiett, and three fellow soldiers from the 391st, Staff Sgt. Joe Ray; Spc. Joshua Hill and Sgt. Kevin Akins, were killed when an IED detonated near their Humvee during combat operations west of Asadabad, Afghanistan. He left behind his wife and their then 2(now 4)-year-old daughter Kyra.
These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

My friend Elizabeth and I talk quite a bit on Messenger — almost daily — so it wasn’t weird for me to be talking to her this afternoon. However, she decide to come visit my kids and me today! The cool part of this is that Elizabeth lives 4 hours from me! Elizabeth and her 2 year old are at my house right now for a visit. The three kids (my two and her one) are playing great together, and everyone is getting along great! Us moms were able to talk, play on our computers, get some blogging done, and generally have a good time. It’s going to be sad when they have to leave, but I am so glad they came to visit!

With my aunt dying a reading about a fellow’s bloggers sister-in-laws husband dying (ironically both of lung cancer), it really makes me think about getting my own affairs in order. Otherwise, my family may have to use an inheritance advance place to make sure they have enough money on hand to cover my funeral expenses (they may still have to use it anyway). Funerals are so very expensive nowadays. Between the casket, the plot, and the headstone, you can easily spend $15,000 – $30,000. Plus, these businesses want their money right away — not when the life insurance kicks in (yes, I have a life insurance policy). When my aunt died, she was cremated. Her thoughts were that why should they spend all that money on a casket. I’m torn — I am not sure which way I’d prefer myself. However, there are a couple of songs that I would prefer to be played — Amazing Grace, On Eagles Wings, and In The Garden.

So far it has been pretty exciting. The plane ride here sucked. It was four and half hours with screaming kids. I made it through it though. LOL They had a limo pick me up. It was pretty cool. I got to baggage claim and the driver was standing there with a sign with my name on it. I probably will never have that happen again, but it still was super awesome. We are staying at La Valencia Hotel and this place rocks. I highly recommend it to anyone staying San Diego. I have an ocean view room. I can literally lay in bed, open my balcony doors, and watch the waves. Sony also provided in our rooms some chocolate and a rose. We also were given gift certificates for dinner. I had fillet mignon. It melted in mouth, that’s how good it was. Even though I didn’t order dessert, I tried my fellow bloggers desserts and they were to die for. So far, this trip has been awesome. Tomorrow should be another fun day. We get to play with the cameras that we are getting. They have us going from 9 am – 9 pm, so hopefully, I will get a chance to blog somewhere in there.
