Why I won’t be shopping at Webb Chevrolet
Sometimes things just piss me off. This story is one of them.
As many of your know, I am a Packer fan. The Bears lost to the Packers on Sunday (and now will be heading to the SuperBowl WOOOHOOOO!) John Stone decided to wear a Green Bay Packers tie he’s had for years to honor his late grandmother, a huge Packers fan to work yesterday. Now, John isn’t even a Packer fan himself. His boss asked him to remove it or else he’d be fired. Not thinking he could actually be serious, he left the tie on. An hour later, he was fired.
Illinois is an “at will” state which means that you can be fired for any reason. However, because the general manager at this place is an idiot — they won’t be getting any of my business. There are plenty of car dealerships on that street who won’t fire an employee for wearing a Packer tie. Obviously, Packer fans are not welcome at Webb Chevrolet.
(I do want to add that the dealership had previously done promotions involving the Chicago Bears and the manager did say “I don’t feel that it was appropriate for him to go directly in contrast with an advertising campaign that we spent a lot of money on.” However, Stone said the reasons for firing him were never made clear to him, nor did he get a chance to explain the tie’s emotional significance.)
Alzheimer’s Memory Walk
As many of you may know, the Alzheimer Association is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I know too many people that have had such a horrible disease. It truly steals who you are right out from underneath you. My mom figures that her dad (my grandfather) had it. I have several great aunt and uncles that have had it also. More recently, Bill’s grandmother had it. Bill and I have been together 12 years, and I never got to know her before she got Alzheimer’s. She passed away about a year or so ago, but I missed out on meeting one remarkable lady. She was blind; yet, she didn’t let it stop her. She had 5 children and she ran the Chicago division of the Guild For The Blind. She wrote many books too. I also have an uncle now that they aren’t sure if it’s Alzheimer’s or dementia that he has. His kids (my cousins) had to put him in a nursing home since he can no longer stay by himself. As you can see, this is a disease that certainly has hit close to home here.
Again, this year, the Alzheimer’s Association will be having their Memory Walk. This is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. They are putting the call out for people to walk and be team captains this year. The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk should be taking place in the fall somewhere close to you (they have walks scheduled all over the nation — 600 communities total). The walk is about 2-3 miles.
Please consider being a captain or a walker for such a great cause. If you are unable to do that, please consider donating to a walker who is walking for such a great cause!
Takeoff
I actually typed this up on Wednesday morning before I left for Miami. My WiFi connection was not great there and didn’t work most of the time, so I am finally posting this now.
It’s about 9 am and I have been up since 5:30 am. I am at O’hare (even though this won’t publish until I am already in Miami since I refuse to pay $6.95 for wifi for the thirty minutes or so I’ll actually have time to blog). I am amazed at the amount of kids that will be on my flight. Not all are so little. There is one little one that I am terrified is going to be sitting next to me. I left my kids home for a reason. I do not want to be sitting next to them. I know that sounds really bad since the kid looks to be a little older than Will. I should be more understanding because I have kids. However, the grandmother is currently chasing the little one around the concourse right now. Every time she makes him sit down, he screams. Please keep your fingers crossed for me. Otherwise, this is going to be a really, really, really long flight.
After the bad weather last night (50 mph winds and snow), I am amazed that my flight is even going to leave on time. O’hare is known for delays, so I was happily surprised that there were no delays. Woo hoo!!! The crazy part of this trip is that with the wind chill it is -25 degrees. Currently, it is 71 in Miami.
I started feeling guilty last night already. I spend 24/7 with my kids so I do like the break. However, with that, I feel incredibly guilty that I am leaving for 3 days. I know they are perfectly fine with my mother in law. However, the mom guilt always gets you.
I did have a funny moment happen at the airport. This may be lack of sleep though and only funny to me. I was walking around looking for a bathroom. They had a sign for a drinking fountain which basically is a person who is bent over drinking. Well, at first glance, it looked like somebody throwing up. I literally stopped and did a double take. I realized what it really was and laughed to myself (don’t want to laugh out loud by myself at the airport – they make think I am crazy lol).
At this point, we are waiting for the flight attendants so we can board the plane. The plane is here, the pilots are here, however, we have no flight attendants. I think they said they were running late. The plane is not suppose to take off for another 25 minutes, so as long as everyone boards quickly, we should still take off on time (in theory).
