Four Foods On Friday

Okay, I have been slacking.  I keep forgetting to do this meme.  Here are the questions for this week:

#1. Bacon. Chewy, crispy or burnt?  Chewy.  Doesn’t that sound so yummy?
#2. Mayonnaise or miracle whip?  I am a miracle whip girl, but the hubby is a mayonnaise man.  Yes, we have a jar of each  in the house.

#3. What green vegetable is used in Italian Wedding soup?  Spinach (I had to look it up though – lol)

#4. Share a recipe that you use Italian sausage in.  Lasagna:

Ingredients:

1 box (16 oz) lasagna noodles
1 lb sweet Italian sausage
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
2 eggs
2 lbs ricotta cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (8 oz)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 jar (48 oz) seasoned tomato sauce

Makes 8 servings
Prep time: 25 minutes
Bake time: 1 hour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook lasagna noodles as package directs; drain and rinse.

Meanwhile, in a nonstick skillet, cook sausage and onion till brown. Drain fat. Stir in garlic and red pepper flakes. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine eggs, ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, and basil. Mix well.

Spread a layer of tomato sauce in a 13 x 9 inch baking dish; top with a layer of noodles. Cover noodles with a layer of the cheese mixture; top with some sausage mixture. Cover with a layer of sauce. Repeat layering with noodles, cheese mixture, sausage mixture, and sauce. Top with final layer of noodles and sauce.

Bake covered for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake about 15 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Staphaseptic

I just caught on the news about the schools in Virginia that have closed down due to staph infections. The kids there are scared to go back to school. The superintendent did not believe that there was a problem until 4 students and a couple of parents took him around and showed him the condition of the rooms like the bathroom and such. The rooms you have to worry about the most with staph infections are the ones that were not, in the eyes of the students and parents, cleaned very well. The school district hired a cleaning crew to go in yesterday and clean all 21 schools (they gave the students a day off). The students and their parents are standing up for themselves and stating that this thorough cleaning needs to be done more often.

Stories like these scare me. As most of you know, I have two small children (3 and 4 months). An infection like this could very easily turn deadly for them. Madison is in preschool, so she could very easily bring this home. She also is a tomboy with a ton of scrapes and bruises all the time. Staph infections can be spread by:

  • close skin-to-skin contact
  • cuts in the skin
  • contaminated surfaces and equipment
  • poor personal hygiene

A preschool is a great breading ground for this. To calm my fears, I did find that there is a product on the market that will help you and your loved ones prevent staph infections. Staphaseptic is applied to any minor cuts, burns, or scrape you may have. It then kills the staph infection before it becomes full blown. When I was in college I got a staph infection, so I know how quickly it can turn from being an innocent little cut to a full blown infection with major problems. Not only does this product stop staph infections, but it also will stop any other germs from getting in there too.

I will be getting a tube of this product shortly. You can buy it at your local stores like CVS, or you can order it online too. I have talked to a couple people who have used it, and they all loved it. I think this is a product that you really to need to have on hand as we are heading into the winter season.

armysp6 Wednesday Hero SSgt. Darrell R. Griffin, Jr.

“He was a really patriotic young man”, said Darrell Griffin Sr. “He said that the people there really needed us and he felt it was the right place to be. He wished we didn’t have to have wars, but since that’s the way mankind is, he felt he was contributing an important part to his country”.

SSgt. Griffin lost his life in Balad, Iraq when his unit came under fire as it was returning to base after conducting security operations in the Iraqi capital.

The eldest son of six children, SSgt. Griffin worked as an EMT before joining the California Army National Guard in 1999. He enlisted in the Army two years later, and in July 2001, was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, in Ft. Lewis, Washington. He served with that unit in Iraq from October 2004 to September 2005.

On his second tour of duty, SSgt. Griffin had been awarded the Bronze Star for valor in 2005 when he was credited with saving the lives of three U.S. and two Iraqi Army soldiers injured during battle in Tal Afar. He had also received the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge, and the Meritorious Unit Citation.

“Griff was the type of man you want to have by your side in a fight,” Maj. Brent Clemmer, his former company commander, wrote from Iraq. “He was the type of squad leader every young soldier wants to have”.

“Darrell was my husband, my Soldier, my gift from God who was also the love of my life and always will be.” Said his wife, Diana. “He was also ‘a Soldier’s Soldier of Strength and Honor’ whose commitment to duty, honor and loyalty will be forever remembered by all who know and love him. The news of his death saddens us deeply and we ask for your prayers in our time of grief. Please also continue to keep our Soldiers in your prayers

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived
