Saturday, October 17th, 2009

This giveaway is now over. Dawn is the winner. Congrats!

ringling250I recently posted about our awesome trip to Disney On Ice.  I now have another great event that we are going to and I’d love to have a local blogger (or non blogger for that matter) join us!  My kids have never been to the circus, so we are so excited that we get to go this year!  After seeing their reaction to Disney On Ice, I know that they are going to love it.  They love animals — I’m just worried about how many souvenirs we’ll end up walking out with!  :)

Now, I have 4 tickets for one family to attend the Ringling Brothers Circus here in Chicago.  The winner will have the option of choosing to attend one of the following opening-night shows:

Stouffer’s Bloggers Roundtable

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

This giveaway is over. The winner is Renee. Congrats!

As many of you know, I went to Ohio in April for the Stouffer’s Bloggers Roundtable. We were able to meet with a ton of experts, eat some awesome food, and a had a ton of fun. I have no pictures, because I am an idiot and left my camera in the room. And I know it’s July, and I’m just posting about this now. If you are a regular reader, you know that I literally came home to Will being taken by ambulance to the hospital. I was on a plane flying home when it happened, and I just got tied up in real life. That being said I have lots of things that I learned there that I have to pass onto you. Here’s a glimpse into my day there:

I know it looks like fun, and it was. I can honestly say I have never eaten quite this good before. However, let’s get to what I learned while I was there:

  • Studies have shown that shared family dinners provide the most significant parent/child interactions, leading to improved language development and reading skills, socialization, identity, self-esteem, a sense of belonging, security, etc. Family dinners have even more impact than playing with or reading to children.
  • Family dinners usually provide the most available, face to face, daily family time. The average time spent in daily, exclusive, parent/child conversation is 14.5 minutes
  • Teens who have frequent family dinners are more likely to say their parents are very proud of them. “Compared to teens who have fewer than three family dinners per week, teens who have five or more are likelier to say their parents are very or fairly proud of them.” — The Importance of Family Dinners II, September 2005.
  • Teens who have frequent family dinners are likelier to say their parents are the adults they would go to if they had a serious problem. Teens who have frequent family dinners are likelier to identify one or both parents as the adult they would turn to with a serious problem.” — The Importance of Family Dinners II, September 2005.
  • Teens who have frequent family dinners are likelier to say they get mostly A’s and B’s in school. “Teens who have dinner with their families seven times a week are almost 40 percent likelier to say they receive mostly A’s and B’s in school compared to teens who have dinner with their families two or fewer times a week.” — The Importance of Family Dinners II, September 2005.
  • The more often teens have dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. “Teens who have five or more family dinners per week are one third less likely to have used alcohol and are half as likely to have used marijuana.” — National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XIII: Teens and Parents, September 2008.

These are just a few of the things I learned there.  However, the statistics speak for themselves.  When I was a child, we always had family dinners, and it would be weird to me not to.  However, obviously, not everyone is that lucky.  I know we have family dinners here every night.  However, this is definitely something we need work on here, because we don’t talk to the kids enough during dinner(I think — though it’s hard when Madison is only 5 and will answer your questions with only a yes or no.).  I think the most important thing I walked away with was that if we start these conversations when our kids are young then when they are 16 they will feel like they can come to us with anything.

51pT0TRCj+L._SL160_Now, starting a conversation can be tough, so I’d like to give one lucky reader The Family Dinner Box Of Questions.  This game can help start a conversation at your dinner table and help you connect to your kids.  For example, there are questions like “what qualities do you look for in a friend” and “which teacher or coach has had the most impact on you”.  Just starting a conversation can you lead you into so many more talks, and you’ll probably be amazed at what you learn about from you kids.

Here’s what you need to do:

Leave a comment on this post.  I’d like to know if you have family dinners at your house and how this game will help you and your family. Or tell me which statistic surprised you the most.

Each of these gives you one additional entry:

10 Things You Should Know About John Chow

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Besides being an A List blogger, I’ll be honest — I really did not know too much about him.  However, after seeing him at Izeafest (yes, I was too chicken to actually talk to him), I was able to make a couple of observations.

1.  He is a blogger first and a celebrity/speaker second.  He was the only blogger/speaker on the Big Money Blogger Panel that I saw attend the Izeafest Conference the entire time both days.  He was always front and center in the audience.  I was super impressed to see him actually blogging about the conference on his blog.

2.  He is really nice.  He talked to every single person that walked up to him.

3.  He likes free stuff as much of the rest of us.  Drew gave him an X-shot to play with, and I watched him and his wife play with it for about 2 hours.  (Shhhh, I played with mine for longer than that.  LOL)

4.  He has been in three movies as a security guard!

5.  He was surprised that Google who makes billions of dollars a year kicked him out.  In that scale, he is just an itty bitty little fleck.

6.  He is really, really funny.  Don’t believe me?  Watch this video:

7. He is normal person who likes to do normal things with normal people. Just ask Colleen who took him on a tour of Universal Studios on Sunday.

8. He joined in the IzeaHunt which was a crazy scavenger hunt we did. He was just as wild crazy as the rest of us. Don’t believe how crazy it was? Watch this:

9. He was constantly videotaping and taking pictures of everything. I don’t know why but it just surprised me to see that he was just as interested in everything as the rest of us were.

10. He just got a really cool new template on his blog. I have to admit I really like it. Its clean and well, I always like blue.

Did you learn anything about John Chow that you didn’t know?

EntreDroppers

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Have you heard of Entrecard before? If you are a blogger, its one of those sites that makes you excited like when you were in high school and found the best acne treatment ever. Seriously, Entrecard drives a fair amount of traffic to your site. However, they recently have gone through some changes that all the users don’t agree with. I won’t get into that since everything can change again in a day or two.

Instead, this post is about Owen and how awesome he is. Owen has written a plugin called EntreDroppers for us WP users. You can see it working in my sidebar (Its called Latest EntreDroppers). All you have to do is input your RSS feed from your Entrecard inbox, and that’s it!  You can tweak it to look like you want — descriptions after blogs, number of blogs showing, etc.  I have mine to show the last ten blogs to drop on me.

Give a shout out to Owen and let him know he rocks and download his plugin!

Blogging, Hosting, and All That Jazz

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Once people find out that you do blogging and sometimes even get paid for it, they all seem interested in finding out how you do what you do. The hard part for me is taking almost two years of knowledge and condensing it down to a five minute synopsis and still have them understand what I am talking about. I try to hit the major points and let them make their own decisions from there.

One of the first things I tell them is that they should get their own domain. If they just want to try it out, yes, a free platform is okay. However, if you are truly serious about blogging, you really need to be on your own domain. If you want to make any money blogging, it is almost a requirement that you are on your own domain. Most advertisers do not free platformed blogs. Having your own domain shows that your serious. Would you trust an expert whose domain ended with blogspot.com? Most people would not.

After you have your domain, you have to host that domain somewhere. There are so many sites out there to choose from it can actually make your mind spin. There are sites out there like Web Hosting Bluebook that really can help you make your decision. They have everything from a hosting glossary to reviews on each of the services, so you understand what each one is offering.  You have decide what company works best for you.  I personally use Bluehost and love them (which is listed on their list!).

Once you have your hosting, you also have to decide which blogging platform you want to use.  There are several platforms to choose from:  everything from Typepad to Wordpress.  I personally use Wordpress, and I love that too.  Once you figure out how to use it, it really is easy.  There are thousands (yes, I said thousands) of plugins that can do almost everything you want them to do (now, if you could get one to clean my house I’d be in seventh heaven – lol).

Once you have done all the above, you really need to figure out what you are going to blog about (though you may have figured this out before you bought your domain).  You can have a niche blog or just a general one.  Niche blogs mean that you only talk about one topic whereas a general blog pretty much covers everything under the sun.  This post is on my general blog.  However, I have 3 niche blogs also.

I guess my last piece of advice I can give to you is that you need to have fun with it.  If you dread blogging each day, it will show in your writing.  If you feel like you are burning out, take a step back.  I love all the people I have met blogging, and this is something I will never regret doing.
