The Birds, The Bees, Life and Death

(Sung to the tune of The Birds and The Bees)

Let me tell you 'bout the birds and the bees
And the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above
And a thing called . . . . . .

Death.

Yeah, the thing we all don't like to talk about. However, this is a conversation we all must have with our loved ones.

I come a fairly big family. My mom is one of 10 siblings with 25 years separating the oldest and the youngest (my mom being the youngest). That means have a lot of cousins. LOL However, that also means death has visited us more than we would like.

When I was in college, my cousin Carmen died. She was six months pregnant and in the hospital for a kidney infection. She had a brain aneurysm and died. Yes, you could consider that a freak occurrence, but she was only in her 20s. I had another cousin in his 30s who was in car accident and died. I just buried another cousin of mine this summer who was in his 30s. (I blogged about that funeral). Age will not protect you from death.

One of the first things Bill and I did after we got married was get life insurance on each other. You never, ever, ever know what the future is going to hold for you. Your young age is NOT going to protect you.

Bill has always made more money than me. We saw life insurance as a way to actually protect both of us though. We personally got term life insurance that would pay off our house if something would happen. As a stay at home (aff) mom, I am especially vulnerable if something happens to Bill. However, he would also be stuck if something happened to me (just not as bad off!). With the house being paid off though, that would take some of the financial stress off while we were trying to adjust to life without the other.

Nobody wants to talk about death. However, you don't ever know when death is going to come knocking on your door. It is something you need to do to provide security for your family.

Do you have life insurance? Why or why not?

My husband and I got insurance when I was pregnant with my first child. I agree it is very important to plan for the unexpected.

wow you do come from a big family, what a blessing! Yes, hubby and I both have life insurance thankfully his work offers it.

My husband has life insurance through his workplace but I don’t think I have any. I’ll have to check. Perhaps I’m covered under his work plan too.

My sister Debbie died when she was 32. She had a brain aneurysm. I was 15. we’ve had a lot of death in our family as well- i guess it happens more in a large family. we all learned from an early age to think of the future

I definitely have come to be prepared for the unexpected. I have a friend who had a 5 year old, diagnosed with a brain tumor, and passed 5 days after. You just never know.

We have life insurance on my husband, but have been lazy about getting some on me. We’ve had the discussion.. and with 4 kids I know he would need the money. Hmmm, maybe I need to make a phone call today!

I know all about the whole big family and lots of death. I’m the youngest of nine. The last two years we have lost 1 niece, 1 nephew, 1 sister and an uncle. You are definitely right, age will not protect you. I just had a friend from High school pass away last weekend. You never know when it’s your time. Life insurance (although not pleasant to talk about) is definitely something everyone needs to have. No matter the age.

I don’t, because I don’t want anyone financially benefitting off my death. It seems morbid. If I die, I leave my sons my home (that I fully paid for myself) and my bank accounts, so they are taken care of.

We have insurance through my husband’s employer. It is important to have all kinds of insurance, ranging from homeowner’s/renters to life.

I hated having to give up my life insurance after I lost my job a few years back.

We have it for my husband since he is the breadwinner. We need it for me so he could afford a cook, nanny, maid, and chauffeur if I died!

  12. Colleen

We have it at work but I have never looked into it outside of what my company offers.

  13. Amber K

We got life insurance as soon as we became parents; seemed kind of imperative.

  14. Tiff @ Babes and Kids

We don’t have life insurance at this point in time, but it’s definitely something we are going to be looking into.

  15. Shell Feis

We don’t have it right now because my husband’s work doesn’t offer it & we aren’t quite in a position to buy it outright right now, but we know we need it!

  16. Donna

We need life insurance. You really don’t ever know, and it’s better to be prepared. Sigh.

My husband used to feel life insurance was a jinx, but he has realized how much his family relies on him, and has changed his tune over the past year. I think he will be getting a policy soon!
