Sports Safety Time!

Do your kids play sports? Mine do. They love to play soccer. Like most sports, there is always the opportunity to get hurt. Madison is my perfect example. This kid is a soccer ball magnet. I know you are all laughing, but the poor kid gets hit with a soccer ball every time there is a soccer ball anywhere near her. Last season, it didn't matter if she was just in practice or playing a game, every single time she got hit with the ball. Normally, it would be in the stomach or in the face. Now, we were lucky, because she never got seriously hurt. However, two years ago, one of her teammates on the older team actually broke his arm at a game. Crazy, right? However, things like that can definitely happen! Here are a few tips we use to help us not get hurt:

  • Wear our safety gear. We have shinguards for a reason, so we where them. We also wear the correct cleat so that not only do my kids not get hurt, but we don't hurt anyone else.
  • Follow the rules. This goes for parents and kids. There are reasons why pushing and tripping are not allowed.
  • Listen to what your body tells you and make sure you tell your coach. One of Madison's friends siblings recently hurt her ankle during the game and didn't tell anyone. Now, she is going to miss the rest of the season.
  • Keep your fingers crossed. Sometimes there is just a bit of luck at play. Madison may be a ball magnet, but she hasn't gotten hurt.
  • Accidents still may happen, so make sure you have coverage. According to the 2014 Aflac WorkForces Report, 66 percent of workers could not afford the costs associated with a serious illness or injury. Without health insurance, the average cost to treat a broken leg, for example, is over $10,0001 now just imagine a serious back injury! Bill's neck injury this summer has rung up $35,000 in medical bills. That’s where Aflac comes in … if someone with an Aflac supplemental insurance plan experiences a serious illness or injury, Aflac helps ease the financial stress and provides cash benefits to help pay for out-of-pocket expenses. Supplemental insurance could help cover these and other expenses that may not be fully covered by your major medical insurance:o Broken teetho Concussionso Ambulance, ground and air

    o Lacerations

As with soccer, injuries can also happen with football.
