5 Rules to Follow if you Wear Contacts

2015-10-22 16.47.28

Did you know that nearly 41 million adults in the U.S. (more than one in ten people) and 125 million people worldwide wear contact lenses? In my house, we all have the need for glasses. I got mine in 7th grade and Bill got his as an adult. My kids have been wearing glasses since they have been 3 (aff) years old. When Madison was 10, she asked for contacts, and we got them for her.

Here are a few rules you should follow if you wear contact lenses:

  1. Only wear your contact lenses as directed by youroptometrists. More than half of Americans wear disposable contact lenses longer than the suggested duration. This bad habit can cause permanent eye damage from bacterial infections and oxygen deprivation! This is why Madison and I wear Dailies. We wear them one day and then throw them out.
  2. Only buy contact lenses legally. There are many ways to get your hands on contact lenses illegally. Don't. These contact lenses often don’t meet quality and safety standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which is a major concern for optometrists. Why take a chance with one of the most important of our senses?
  3. Make sure that you are cleaning and rinsing your contact lenses with the proper solutions. You need to remove mucus, secretions, films or deposits that can build up during wearing and lead to bacterial growth. Do not use rewetting drops or tap water to clean your contact lenses. Instead, a multi-purpose solution should be used. I know we get a bottle of solution when we order contacts from your optometrists.
  4. This next rule sounds like common sense. Always wash and dry your hands before handling your contact lenses. You don't want to be introducing anything to your eyes that shouldn't be there!
  5. Get yearly comprehensive eye exams. Doctors of optometry can often see indications of potential health problems that can affect the whole body besides the health of your eyes!

This is great information for people who wear contacts. I don’t, but I’ll share with my husband.

  2. This is a great post. Contacts are wonderful, but they are a foreign body that you put into your eye. You need to be careful with them.

I have been wearing contacts for such a long time it is almost like second nature to me. These are all awesome tips! Make sure you take care of those contacts, infection comes easily when you don’t.

  4. Excellent tips for contact lenses. I only wear glasses for driving so I have never tried them. And my husband was excited to try contacts since he has been wearing glasses since he was a kid, but he just could not get use to wearing the contacts everyday.

  5. Mimi

I learned about contacts when I worked at the eye doctors office. I’m thankful that my vision is still pretty good so I don’t need assistance.

  6. Erin

I wish I could wear contacts but they bother my eyes so much! Maybe its time to try again?

I remember about a year agi, the kids were talking about their Halloween costume. One of the fun Halloween ccostumes, wanted tk wear non presentation contacts. It just dawned on me that I think they were perhaps sharing or trying each others contacts. I just didn’t connect the dots. I think education happens a hike however; sometimes arent told or don’t care.

I wish I had this knowledge that I have now and I would have discussed contact safety a but more in depth conversation.

great tips. I dont wear contacts anymore but I definitely wore them for way longer than I was suppose to. Part of the reason why I dont wear them anymore.

These are great tips to follow. My husband wore contact lenses for years until he had a Lasik surgery. He did all these during those times.

Thank you for the tips. I’m not wearing eyeglasses yet, but once I already need to, I’ll be looking into contact lenses as well.

I don’t wear contacts, my eyes are too dry and they are uncomfortable, but these look like very helpful rules! I do wear glasses and those come with a set of rules all on their own. LOL!

  12. Liz Mays

This is great advice. The eyes are not to be messed around with. Vision and eye health is too important!

  13. Rosey

I agree with Liz. It is very important to learn, know and practice good eye health.

  14. HilLesha

Although my mom and one of my brothers can wear contacts with ease, I can never wear them. I don’t want anything touching my eyes! ~lol~

I have been thinking about trying contacts. The color ones would be a great way to change up your look. These are great tips.
