Cross Stitching

Do any of you cross stitch? The reason I ask is that I have project that I have been working on since before Madison was born (yeah, I'm a little slow). My question pertains to what is really the correct way to do this. The back of my project looks as if a tornado has went through it. Is that how it was suppose to look?

I love to cross stitch. Sorry to say, but the back really shouldn't look like a tornado went through it. lol But, as long as the front doesn't and when your done the project you frame it, no one ever needs to know about the back. lol

How was I really suppose to do it? A line at a time? Or use the thread until it was finished?
