Giving Back This Holiday Season

Did you know that The Salvation Army Chicago serves communities in Chicago, Northern Illinois, and Lake County, Indiana? They provide emergency financial assistance, grocery assistance through food pantries, educational and recreational programs for children, adults and seniors, and leadership training and character development for youth. It is mind-blowing how many services they offer! I know I didn't realize they did all this for my community! They do a ton for the communities they serve, but they need our help.

Where my kids go to school, they emphasize giving your time, giving your talent, and giving your treasure back to the community. It's something we have embraced as a family, so we always try to give back (and if you know me in real life, it's something we talk about often. I'm blessed that I have more than I need). It's also something that everyone can do and The Salvation Army is need of!

To keep all of their amazing programs going, they need people giving their time, talent, and treasure. Don't have a lot of money, but have a few hours a week? Perfect! Don't have time, but would rather write a check? That works too! Have some extra food? Call your local Corps Community Center to see what they need for their food pantry!

This is such an important cause, so they need everyone's help. Everyone needs a little help sometime, and we all deserve a hand up. Did you know that 812,000 people in Cook County turn to food pantries for groceries? Of those seeking assistance, almost 60 percent have to choose between paying their rent or mortgage and buying groceries. Families shouldn’t have to sleep in the cold, and children shouldn’t have to go to bed hungry. As crazy as those numbers are, this will blow your mind: Feeding programs are providing 1,411,913 nutritious meals to hungry people of all ages across metropolitan Chicago! That's a lot of meals! There is as greater need here than most people realize. Emergency assistance was provided in 112,998 instances to help with rent and mortgage, clothing, transportation, utility bills, prescription medication and more. This keeps families in their homes instead of having them on the streets.

I could keep going on with these statistics, but you get the drift. The Salvation Army serves a lot of people. Let's continue to make this possible by helping The Salvation Army this holiday season. How can you help? You can be a bell ringer (sign up here: registertoring.com) or check for other opportunities here!

How are you helping this less fortunate this holiday season? Are you donating your time, your talent, or your treasure this year to The Salvation Army?

We volunteer in our family and we are happy that we can give back to the community in this way. It is a great lesson for the kids, too.

I understand the Salvation Army gives to help people. I always look into what kind of salaries the top people are making and if they give across the board and support everyone including LGBT community.

We do a local food drive for the holidays and take the donations to our local food bank. And every time we see the bell ringers, they get a donation.

There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. This is so true. Helping those less fortunate is a blessing in itself.

I love the Salvation Army. They helped my family when my husband lost his job 6 years ago. They paid one of our bills for us, gave us food and even invited us to go Christmas shopping for the kids at their big shopping event. It was amazing and now that we are back on our feet, we always make sure we give back to them multiple times a year.

We do this kind of service through our church and school. There’s so much we can do to give back to our community.

  17. The Salvation Army is a terrific organization. I hope one day more people will try to give back and work to make a difference with organizations and causes like this year round, not just at the holidays.

I love the Salvation Army and all they do for people. I have a friend who works closely with them as a higher up volunteer and it just amazes me.

Let me give them a call and see what grocery items they need. I am all for helping out the less fortunate, especially the children. They deserve a good Thanksgiving and Christmas as much as we do. Thank you for the timely reminder.
