How Are You Spending Your I-Cash?

As you all know, I live in the wonderful state of Illinois. Now, if you are a resident here, have you heard about the I-Cash program?

The program was founded in 1999 with the goal of reuniting Illinois residents with their unclaimed assets.   You’d be amazed at how much money the Illinois Treasurer is holding that people haven’t claimed.  It is shocking!  The Illinois Treasurer is currently safeguarding more than $2 billion in cash and 20 million shares of stock and mutual funds that need to be returned to Illinoisans!  Insane, right?  How does the state Treasurer end up with this?  These assets are transferred to the Treasury after banks, government agencies, and other companies become unable to return them to their rightful owners.  Yes, you will find money in the I-Cash database you didn’t know you had.  I just checked for this blog post and my sister-in-law is listed on the site!  It’s less than $10, but she can totally use that on her kids!  Two of Bill’s really good friends have money to claim too (between $10 – $100).  Even better is that we are going to a wedding this weekend, and I just found the groom’s name.  He has 5 different things, and he’s got a least $100 coming to him!  That will be a great wedding/honeymoon surprise for him!  We will all be at this wedding, and I can’t wait to tell them all!

I know you want to check to see if you have any assets.  The website is a free and easy way for you to discover if you have cash or other assets to recover. The process is simple:

  1. Enter your name (or a family member or friend’s name) into the online search field
  2. If it’s a match, submit the online claim form
  3. Receive your property in an average of three weeks’ time and enjoy!

With more than 13 million names in the I-Cash database, one in four Illinois adults who search the website discovers property to claim. The average claim is about $1000, while the highest claim was more than $8 million in 2012. You never know what you might find.  Seriously, it will take you 5 minutes!  Actually, I searched my entire family in about 5 minutes.  It’s that quick, and it’s even better if you find you are owed some money!

What would you spend the money on if you find any assets using I-Cash?

This post was sponsored by the Illinois Treasurer’s I-Cash program. While I have been compensated for my time, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

  1. We have a similar program here in NC. You can log on to a web site, type in your name and SSN, and find out if there is some unclaimed money there for you. I can’t remember the web address right off, but it helped me locate a paycheck from a fast food chain in Virginia that I was owed!

  2. This is the first time I’ve heard about this. I’m going to have to look more in to it. I’m interested to know if my husband or I would be on here. Thanks for posting. I’m checking it out now.

  3. I have never heard of this before. I am definitely going to check this out. There are so many great deals to be had.

  4. I filled out something like this a little while ago in my state and found I had $50. =) It was pretty cool to find out, wish I had more money coming my way though lol.

  5. This sounds like an awesome program indeed. I will have to check it out for sure. I totally love that five minutes of your time and bring something good. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Yup, I think most states have this. I had some unclaimed money here in Michigan that I was reunited with. It was a couple of hundred dollars, I *think* it was a deposit for a secured credit card, but I’m not totally sure.
