How Small Spending Can Lead to Big Rewards

Thank you CreditCards.com for sponsoring this post. Visit CreditCards.com today to find the right card for you.

Many, many, many years ago, Bill and I bought the house we live in. Okay, so it was more like 12 years ago. Our best credit card came from this purchase. How do you ask? Well, a couple months after our house loan went through, we got a call from the company that holds our mortgage. They want to know if we wanted to join their credit rewards program. We, of course said yes!

The way our credit card works is that 1% of what we charge gets taken off the principal of our mortgage. Needless to say, we immediately signed up. Now, for credit rewards to work, you do have to pay your balance off monthly which we do. Now, with all that being said, we literally charge everything.

Lunch? Charge it. Siding for the house? Charged that too! School tuition. Charge away! Stuff for outside, it's on the credit card! For us, it works and our mortgage principal thanks us for it. We literally make an extra payment a year just in this rewards program! Who wouldn't want to save on their mortgage? I know, we literally jumped at the chance. Best of all, it automagically does it, so I don't have to do anything. It just happens every month. Last month, over $100 got taken off the principal of my mortgage. Each month that totally adds up!

Now, not everyone has a mortgage. Some people would rather get rewards or cash back. Through innovative tools, experiences and advice, CreditCards.com helps people find the right cards and use them the right way. They rate and review credit cards to provide objective, useful comparative information to help you choose the right card for you.

How do you choose what credit card you are going to apply for and use? What rewards are you currently getting?

We actually don’t have any credit cards. We use our debit card for everything and it works well for us.

  2. Alli Smith

What a great plan! I love that 1% goes toward your house payment. We always pay off our credit card every month too and we get airline miles. I think I like your credit card better!

  3. Amber Myers

I agree with this! We have credit cards, but we always use the ones with rewards. We’ve gotten so many gift cards from this!

  4. Terri Beavers

That’s so cool that you can use this towards your mortgage. I only have 2 credit card and I only use it for emergencies. I need to check this one out for the rewards program.

  5. Jeanette

I would totally take that deal if my mortgage company offered it. I have been trying to find creative ways to pay off the principal without going broke. This would be perfect.

  6. Christy Maurer

That is an awesome reward card! Reward cards are the best as long as you pay them off each month. Thanks for sharing this one with us!

I think as long as you keep your expenses manageable, it’s good to have a credit card. It’s also good to take advantage of the different promos.

Wow. How great to have a credit card that goes toward your mortgage. That one percent over time will surely help!

We pay our one credit card off every month and our house is paid for. We fly for free on all our trips because of our credit card.

I didn’t know that’s how it worked! We got a similar offer and I have declined it so far. That’s super cool.

  11. Rachel

Well now I want a credit card that takes off principle from my mortgage. What a great reward!

  12. Pam

I have never heard of a credit card that takes off your mortgage. That is really awesome!

  13. Mommy Moment

I love the idea of the reward points I receive on my credit card helping to pay off our mortgage. I have never heard of that before.

  14. Rose Cottrill

I wish our mortgage company would offer that because we do charge everything with credit card and then pay it off before the interest comes, that would help out a lot.

I have a credit/debit card with rewards and use it all the time. It’s attached to my bank account, so I’m always using my balance, yet still getting the rewards. Win/win!

Couldn’t agree more! One of the only credit cards I use is a travel benefit one – it gives me points every time I make a purchase, and a ton of my annual travel costs are covered because of it! So cool!

  17. Cheryl

That is very cool! I also believe in the power of using credit cards, but for travel rewards. I would totally sign up for one with our mortgage if possible!

  18. Our Family World

That sounds fantastic. 1% of the cost of purchases charged to your credit card gets taken off your mortgage. That is a good deal! I know most of us would love to get free air miles credit but I think this one that helps pay off the mortgage is tops!

  19. Annemarie LeBlanc

I will have to check out CreditCards.com. I do have a credit card that gives me free air miles in their rewards system. I would love to learn more about this one you mentioned that pays part of your mortgage. My daughter would love that.
