Choosing a wedding venue is one of the most exciting and meaningful decisions you will make while planning your big day, and learning how to choose a wedding venue can make the process feel far more manageable. Your venue sets the tone for the celebration, shapes your photos, and influences nearly every other detail, from décor to guest experience. A beautiful venue is not just about how it looks, but about how it feels, how it functions, and how well it supports the kind of wedding you want to create.
Below is a practical, step-by-step guide to help you choose a wedding venue that feels both stunning and right for you.
Start With the Feeling You Want
Before touring venues, think about the overall mood you want your wedding to have. Do you picture something romantic and elegant, relaxed and natural, or bold and modern? A historic mansion, a vineyard, a beachfront space, and an industrial loft can all be beautiful, but they create very different experiences.
Defining the atmosphere you want makes it easier to rule out venues that do not align with your vision, even if they are objectively gorgeous.
Consider Your Guest Experience
A beautiful venue should also be comfortable and accessible for your guests. Think about travel distance, parking, nearby hotels, and ease of navigation. Consider whether the space flows well from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception so guests are not confused or rushed.
Also think about practical details like restrooms, climate control, and seating options. A venue that feels thoughtful and easy for guests will always feel more beautiful in the end.
Evaluate the Natural Setting and Light
Natural surroundings and lighting play a huge role in how a venue photographs and feels. Outdoor venues often shine because of scenery and natural light, while indoor spaces can be elevated by large windows, high ceilings, or architectural details.
Ask to tour the venue at the same time of day as your wedding. This helps you understand how light moves through the space and whether it complements the look you want for your ceremony and reception.
Match the Venue to Your Guest Count
A venue should feel full and lively, not cramped or empty. Make sure the capacity fits your guest list comfortably. A smaller wedding in a massive ballroom can feel impersonal, while too many guests in a tight space can feel overwhelming.
Ask how the venue accommodates different layouts for dining, dancing, and ceremony seating so you know the space will work well for your numbers.
Understand What Is Included
Some venues are blank slates, while others include tables, chairs, linens, lighting, or even décor elements. Neither option is better than the other, but it is important to know what you are getting.
A venue that already has strong character may require less decoration to feel beautiful. On the other hand, a simpler space can be transformed completely if you want a highly customized look.
Think About Weather and Backup Plans
If you are considering an outdoor or partially outdoor venue, ask about weather contingency plans. A beautiful venue should still function smoothly if the weather changes. Knowing there is a solid backup option will give you peace of mind and protect your vision.
Stay True to Your Budget
A stunning venue does not have to break your budget. Be clear about costs upfront, including rental fees, service charges, and required vendors. Sometimes a venue that looks more expensive actually saves money by including essentials that you would otherwise rent separately.
Focus on value, not just price. The right venue supports your vision without forcing you to compromise everything else.
Trust Your Instincts
After all the practical considerations, there is one factor that matters most: how the venue makes you feel. When you walk in, do you feel excited? Can you picture yourself getting married there? Does it feel like you?
If the answer is yes, you are probably in the right place.
A beautiful wedding venue is one that reflects your style, supports your plans, and creates an unforgettable experience for you and your guests. By balancing aesthetics with practicality and trusting your instincts, you can choose a venue that feels just as special as the day itself.

I recently shot a wedding at a 19th century fort on the coast of Adelaide. The bride and groom were greeted by a guard of honour and they fired a 50in gun salute. Cost them $500 for one shot :/ Interesting though!
