Walt Disney Animation Studios has found its Moana. The story behind the casting is as compelling as the film itself.
Auli’i Cravalho, a 14-year-old Native Hawaiian newcomer, will voice the fearless title character. Dwayne Johnson voices the legendary demigod Maui. The film follows 16-year-old Moana, a determined teenager who defies her island’s ban on voyaging. She sets sail on a daring mission to save her people. In the process, she discovers her own identity.
Cravalho’s path to the role was anything but planned. With her sights set on sophomore year, not stardom, she only landed the audition after the film’s Hawai?i casting director remembered a charity showcase performance. The director tracked her down. It proved to be the right call. “Her audition was fantastic; she was such a raw talent,” said producer Osnat Shurer. Directors John Musker and Ron Clements agreed. They praised her fearlessness, playful wit, and deep connection to her Polynesian heritage. All these qualities mirror Moana herself.
The film’s music is equally ambitious. The soundtrack features seven original songs crafted by an extraordinary creative trio. Tony and Grammy-winning Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, three-time Grammy-winning composer Mark Mancina, and world music artist Opetaia Foa’i of Te Vaka contributed to the soundtrack. Cravalho performs Moana’s signature song “How Far I’ll Go,” with Alessia Cara delivering the end-credit version. Additionally, Dwayne Johnson brings Maui to life through the show-stopping “You’re Welcome.” Jordan Fisher handles end-credit duties for that song.
The Moana original motion picture soundtrack arrives November 18, with a deluxe edition featuring demos, outtakes, and instrumental tracks. The film itself opens in U.S. theaters on November 23, 2016.
