This all went down on the morning of Christmas Eve. Madison was just two years old at the time, and she definitely added her own special twist to the excitement around her Christmas presents. She also nearly gave me a heart attack. 🙂
Since we were leaving for Green Bay on Christmas morning, we decided to pull the Santa card a day early. We couldn’t wait for Madison to see the scooter we’d picked out for her — one of the gifts we were most excited about. Sure enough, as soon as she spotted it, her whole face lit up. She hopped right on and was in her own little world, zooming around and loving life.
After a few minutes of scooter fun, Bill gently encouraged her to open some of the other gifts from Santa. And that’s when things took an unexpected turn. With that innocent honesty only a toddler has, Madison suddenly looked at Bill and announced, “Daddy, those aren’t from Santa. You brought them up from downstairs.”
Cue my heart stopping.
A few weeks earlier, I had wrapped all the presents while Bill and Madison were out. When they got home, Bill carried them all downstairs to keep everything looking Santa-official.
But now here we were — caught red-handed by a two-year-old detective. So, thinking fast, I put on my best Christmas-magic voice and cheerfully explained that those unwrapped presents were Santa’s special deliveries. Meanwhile, Mommy and Daddy lovingly wrapped the others to help him out.
Thankfully, that explanation worked like a charm.
And honestly, the whole moment was so sweet and funny. Madison’s sharp little observation added a playful twist to the day, and it reminded us that the magic of Christmas isn’t just in the gifts – it’s in the unexpected surprises, the giggles, and the moments we’ll retell for years. As we headed off to Green Bay, the Christmas spirit couldn’t have been more alive, wrapped up in love, laughter, and the adorable logic of a two-year-old.
