Sometimes It’s the Outside That Counts…

This is a guest post. (1)

For the first time in a long time, it is the outside that counts. No not your body, guess again….your house. People have been getting it wrong for years: home (aff) is not where your heart is, home (aff) is where you put your heart. Yes, there is a difference. A house can be a house no matter where you put it and no matter whats inside and who lives in it. But what you do too make it your own, will transform it from another house on the block to your home. The one you cherish and love with all of your heart.

Here are some easy and simple steps that will do just that for you. All you need is the propergardening tools, time and a little tender loving care:

  1. Embrace your inner child and explore your imagination. When we were younger children, we always dreamed about what our houses looked like. Sometimes the things you want to get done just require a little elbow grease. Have fun and just be creative. Draw it out, talk it over with whomever is planning this all out and just think about all of the options.
  2. Know your budget. If you plan on making this a home, then it is probably safe to assume you plan on staying there for quite some time. Come up with a rough draft, put it on your fridge and like a ten-year-old and their chores, check things off as they become completed. Yes it may take time, but you can do it yourself. There are advice columns all over the internet and magazines on things you can do.
  3. This is very important, pick a theme. You probably have lots of dreams, and they are probably all so amazing. But, if you want it too look as stunning as your imagination sees it, then it will need to be a little more like organized chaos, and less like your imaginationthrew up on your yard. And not literally a theme, like Disney or Power Rangers, but something that allows your creativity and still has the class and style of a modern art piece.
  4. Do not be afraid to let your house age with you. Let your home evolve (aff) with your personality and interests. After all, it is a reflection of who you are and the person you are bound to become. This step ties in the with the other idea of having a theme, picking a theme that is a little timeless. Things that are timeless are usually much easier to change if need be. But picking a theme that is trendy that year, in ten or twenty years may no longer be the best thing.

Your home is your home, In the end it can be what you want it to become. Home can be the one place you look forward to coming back to every day, or just another beat up house you bought for a good deal. If you want a home, it can not be home if you dont take a little piece of your heart and soul and pour it into it.

Yes, lots of these DIY projects cost money. But if this is something you truly care about, you will slowly start setting some money away for this type of project. If you have a significant other you can get even more creative and have the place be a reflection of you two aging together and an amazing representation of your relationship. If its just you, make this a hobby make it a part of you.
