So I Went For A Second Opinion On The Hashimotos And We Found Something Else

I was referred to an awesome doctor a tad closer to my home than the other one. I was told she would fight for me and be my advocate. Let me tell you, she has been all that and more. (here’s my first post if you missed it)

I went and saw her this last Wednesday. She did confirm that I have Hashimotos disease. She also thinks I have a hormone deficiency of some sort (we’ve got a test running for that). She also thinks I have some adrenal gland issues (I’m taking the test for that today). My hands and feet are so cold all the time. I seriously have people ask if I am still alive, because my hands are sooo cold. She also reran my bloodwork. The first thing she said when she saw my other bloodwork was that I had an infection. That was the precursor to what was going to happen next. However, let me tell you a few of the other findings first. As of right now, I don’t have to go gluten, soy, or anything else free. Also, the thyroid supplement was making me sick, and I was right. It was the worse thing I could have taken, and she told me to throw it in the garbage can. She also told me that he had me on way too much of the Vitamin D (too much can make you toxic) and the fish oil (can give you high cholesterol).

She also said when you lose a large amount of weight, your thyroid resets itself. However, mine obviously didn’t reset itself correctly. So seriously, I am the only person who loses almost 80 lbs and makes herself sick.

In doing her physical of me, we found a mass in my abdomen the size of your fist. Needless to say, my doctor’s appointment after that took a huge turn. I spent Wednesday getting 3 ultrasounds done. I was literally driving home when they called and told me I had to get a catscan on Thursday. I got that done (and it was both kinds – I had to drink barium AND they hooked me up to an IV of iodine. I was told I would get the result on Monday.

My doctors office called me on Friday and told me I had needed to come in on Saturday to get my results. The thing I had going for me was that because it hurt when we pushed on said mass, it was a good thing.

Here’s what we found out:

1. The mass isn’t a mass. It isn’t cancer. However, there is a “sack” or “pocket” of fluid in my abdomen. They don’t know why it is there. They don’t know what the fluid is. Mr doctor is consulting with a surgeon on Monday to determine my next step. All I know is that if you push on my stomach it hurts and I had a horrible night after the CT Scan. It is the size of a fist. There is also lymph nodes in a place you aren’t suppose to have them. They happen to be pushing on this “sack”. Remember the bloodwork. Well my white blood cell count has increased in the last month, so there is something definitely going on. My complaint of constant tiredness is also may actually have more to do with this than my thyroid!

2. I have a nodule of my lung. I spend Saturday getting a chest X-ray that turned out okay.

3. I have a cyst on my kidney. That could be from not drinking enough water and I’ll admit to that.

4. I have a cyst on my ovary. She is very concerned that I haven’t had a period since my ablation. With my age, I guess I should have had something. This could be why this cyst is there.

Basically, I’m a mess. 🙂 My functioning level sucks and to be honest, I’m overwhelmed. In you know me in real life, I’m just trying to keep it all together right now. Until I talk to the surgeon, we aren’t telling the kids anything.

The part that is kicking my butt right now is that I have to quit drinking soda. No diet. No regular soda. I have to stop drinking it all. I was self medicating with caffeine, so I’m a little worried with how this week is going to go since I was drinking it to keep awake. Everyone in my family took a breath that it wasn’t cancer, however this isn’t the end of the road. That part honestly scares me. There could be surgery in my future.

To be honest, I just want to feel better. I’m frustrated. I’m sick. (On a good note though, I lost 4 lbs having to fast 2 days this week LOL)

  1. Oh Lisa,
I’m so sorry you are going through all of this. If you ever need to chat let me know.
As far as the soda… I know it is hard to give up (I can never do it), but in the feeble attempts I’ve made where I’ve managed to at least go a week w/out it I have found my energy actually increased…not decreased. So the lack of caffeine really isn’t an issue, for me anyway.
I hope things turn out well for you and you can figure out what is going on! At least you have found a better doctor, I’m glad for that. It sucks to have a doctor who doesn’t actually listen to YOU.

  2. First, I’m sorry you are tired and aren’t feeling well. It sucks so much to be in that spot.
Second, I’m glad the tumor they found isn’t cancer. Because that would suck a whole lot.
Third, don’t freak out about all the stuff they find. The thing is people walk around with cysts, spots, etc all the time and never know. But once they scan you for one problem, they find all those lovely extras and then they have to check them. I swear everytime I get scanned I just know there will be more tests to follow because they can never manage to find nothing. Boo.
I’ll be thinking of you and hoping that with the new doctor you can start to get energy back and feel better and that they can take care of the mass quickly and easily!

(P.S. I had an ablation in Jan and haven’t had a period, which is why we did the ablation to completely stop my periods. I don’t think we are far off in age if that makes you feel any better at all)

    1. Thanks Brandie! She did tell me that the kidney and ovary cysts is something that she not all that worried about and she would have been shocked if she wouldn’t have found something.

It’s the “pocket” that is throwing everybody off. Add that on top of my thyroid not working correctly and this infection, I literally am not functioning all that well.

I honestly can’t wait for the phone call on Monday after she talks to the surgeon.

  3. Oh sweetie, I’m sending a hug and my prayers your way as hard as I can. I wish your reproductive system would just behave already, though. Sheesh, like you haven’t been through enough with that as it is.

I’m relieved that you found a doctor who has a real treatment plan unlike your previous Doctor who I will always think of as “Doctor Quack” because SERIOUSLY.

If there’s anything at all I can do for you, virtually or otherwise, let me know! My whole family sends their love and hopes you feel better soon 🙂 xoxo

  4. Sorry for the mind blowing array of “news” but so happy that you have so quickly found a good doctor who IS going to get to the bottom of it all. 5. I am so glad you went for a second opinion! This new doctor definitely seems to be taking things more seriously and looking into symptoms as more than just one off symptoms but as a part of a bigger picture. It sounds like you’re on the path for answers now, thank goodness.

  6. Wow what a whirlwind you have been going through. Praying for your health to be restored, energy to flood back to you, and for things to go back to a normal place, if not even better. <3

  7. http://www.thyroidlifestyle.com/
I happened to see this on Amazon. I have a credit that will cover it if you need it.

I have hypothyroidism, HEPC and COPD. I also have herniated disks. If it not on thing it another,

When I had an exam by a specialist, he was shocked that I had this huge goiter on my neck. He was already to operate and it turned out it was filled with fluid. Evidently the tube between thyroid and throat had not closed when I was young. They went in and removed a lobe of thyroid and put me on a supplement.

You have to deal with your health on a daily basis. I have been sick for 3 years and it sucks. Depression is another symptom you may have to cope with. Get help and God Bless You.

  8. Yikes! Sorry to hear you’re going through all of this, especially after working so hard to lose weight and get fit. 14. You poor thing! At least you’ve finally got a good doctor who has figured out what the issues are. I can totally relate to the cold hands and feet. In the winter, my hubby says I have “dead people hands/ feet”! Praying for a speedy recovery to full health for you!

  15. So sorry for all you are going through. It must be tough to stay cheerful on the outside while you are so worried and feel so sick. I hope they find the medicine to make all the bad stuff go away. Good luck!

  17. Oh my goodness! I am just meeting you, but I will be sending you good thoughts and prayers. I don’t know what Hashimoto’s disease is, but I am going to look it up… I had a mass in my groin area when I was younger and it was an infected lymph node…they drained it and when it healed I was fine… I hope you figure out everything and start to feel better!

  18. Oh man! I feel so ad for you, but you seem like a strong person who can do this-you lost all that weight! Not many people could do that! I hope you get all the answers you need to repair your body!

  19. Sounds like the dr is working to figure things out. I know anytime I get a second opinion I always wind up ending up thinking I need a third, so see which of the first two they agree with, LOL.

  20. Wow, I am glad they are finding what is wrong with you , but sorry that you have to go through so much to get better. My partner has Hashimoto. I had never heard of it before. Now I am learning more than I want to. Take care.

  21. Lisa Martin you are not far from me…I have Hashimotos Disease and see an amazing endocrinologist. The only reason why I originally starting going to him is because I found an article that said he was one of the best in the country. He is located in Hinsdale and I can message you his information if you would like.

  22. On a positive note…..you’re strongere than you know it! You made it through the doctor visit! And you’re able to share your experience with us. Hope now with this doctor you will be get better soon! Blessings!!

  23. I’m so glad you went for a second opinion! It sounds like this doctor is doing a much better job. Also, very glad to hear it is not cancer. I hope they will finish getting you a thorough, accurate diagnosis and on the road to healing very soon.

  24. So sorry to hear of all you are going through! I have something wrong with my kidneys, and it’s been 2 years and they still don’t have a diagnosis for me. It can be so frustrating dealing with doctors sometimes, at times I feel I just need to diagnose myself! Hope you figure everything out, as not knowing can be the worst part.

  25. I am so sorry to hear that you have so many medical issues.. I am glad that you went to get a second opionion and this doc. became your advocate.. I also suffer from a lot of medical issues and so do a couple of my kids.. I hope that you get the treatment you need and everything works out.. If you don’t mind I will add you to my prayers…

  26. Hi,
I am a new follower and saw a post on twitter and had to read your story. I want to ask if your Doctors have done an autoimmune panel on you? I have had similar medical issues in the past and it was found I have Lupus among a gamete of other things.
I wish you the best and will pray for you.
    Joan

  27. I am so very sorry to learn of your health issues. I hope things improve for you and thanks for the great blog and all of your hard work.
