Wordless Wednesday: Tribute

Cystic Fibrosis Tattoo

So this week isn't going to be so Wordless. If you read here regularly, then you will know that last week I attended the funeral for my cousin in Wisconsin. He was only 31 years old. He had Cystic Fibrosis. When he was born, we were told that he'd only live into his 20s. Well, he lived to be 31 years old. We always knew this day would come. However, when it did, we all realized we weren't ready. Though Matthew had another surprise for us all. Without telling anyone, he signed up to be an organ and tissue donor. Cystic Fibrosis ravaged a lot of his organs, but he was able to donate tissue, skin, and bone to others in need. I think they said he was able to donate 42 out of 49 things they look for. Even in death, he was able to help others!

Last week, I can easily admit, was one of the hardest. I was asked to speak at the wake, so I compartmentalized everything I was feeling and got up and told a funny story about Matthew. I did make about a hundred people laugh, so I think my job was done. 🙂

Matthew wanted to get a tattoo that said Defy All Odds. However, his doctors wouldn't allow it. One of my other cousins decided that we should get the tattoo for him. After the wake and funeral, we went to the tattoo parlor.

Yes, that's my leg. Here's what we got:

For those who don't know, that's the Cystic Fibrosis Rose (Since Cystic Fibrosis is hard to say, they often times tell kids to call it 65 Roses. Hence, the rose). Then we got the “defy the odds” like Matthew wanted.

I am so sorry about your cousin. My husband was a respiratory therapist and he worked with CF patients. Your tribute is awesome and I am sure he would be pleased. Blessings to you,

  4. I often question my own mortality when I attend a funeral. It is almost like you can re-commit to your own life and try to live it better; for me anyway. I loved reading this.

A lovely tribute. Also, I can really relate to your experience about telling a funny story at the wake. I did that same thing at my Grandfather’s funeral. It was a strange feeling to be able to tell a funny story in front of a big crowd, and for two minutes, be completely removed from the sad situation.
