Cold and flu season is here, and with it comes the sniffles, sneezes, and sick days we all try to avoid. Getting sick can throw everything off track, whether you’re juggling work, school, or just everyday life. The good news? A few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your household healthy. These 10 easy tricks can help you stay one step ahead this season, from boosting your immune system to cutting down on germs
1. Get A Flu Shot
There’s a reason doctors keep telling people to get a flu shot every year. It’s the #1 way to protect yourself from the flu. My kids and I get vaccinated every year, following the advice of Madison’s geneticist and pediatrician.
2. Vitamins
My kids take a daily vitamin to help support their immune systems. If you’ve got a picky one like my son Will, who refuses to take them, don’t give up – keep hunting for a character version they’ll love. I finally found a Spider-Man one, and now the daily vitamin battle is over! Just be sure to check with your doctor to avoid doubling up on any specific nutrients, especially if you’re already taking a multivitamin.
3. Eat Healthy
Encourage your kids to eat balanced, nutritious meals. It’s one of the simplest ways to help their immune systems stay strong.
4. Handwashing
Want to stop a cold or flu in its tracks? Start with soap and water. Handwashing is your best defense against flu and cold symptoms.
5. Use Disinfectants
When the flu starts at school, Lysol becomes my best friend. I go into full defense mode, spraying down door handles and anything else the whole family touches to help stop germs from spreading.
6. Wash Your Bedding
Wash bedding more often during cold and flu season. I make it a point to clean everyone’s sheets at least once a week to help keep germs at bay.
7. No Sharing
We never share cups. It’s one of the simplest ways to prevent germs from spreading.
8. Chicken Noodle Soup
I always try to keep chicken noodle soup on hand. It’s my go-to when I feel a cold or the flu coming on. There’s just something about it that feels like magic and makes everything a little better.
9. Lemons
I always keep lemons in the kitchen. When I feel a cold coming on, I make a hot lemon drink with fresh lemon juice, hot water, and just enough sugar to make it drinkable. Yes, I adjust the sugar until it tastes right! It’s a simple remedy that always brings a little comfort.
10. Sleep
Plenty of sleep is a must during cold and flu season. I do my best to make sure everyone gets enough rest. It’s one of the most effective ways to help the body fight off illness.
Staying healthy during cold and flu season doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You can give your family the best chance at staying well with simple habits, like regular handwashing, plenty of sleep, nutritious meals, and some tried-and-true remedies. While you can’t avoid every germ, being proactive makes a big difference. Here’s to a happy, healthy season ahead!
Nice post. I like point #10. That's what I do in my office.
Fruits and veggies are always on my checklist, place a huge fruit basket in the kitchen so kids can always grab a healthy snack.
I like sleeping if i get a chance i sleep hole a day and a night.
Great post, my daughter just started going to the daycare at the gym and we have already had 2 colds. You have to love this time of year.
