Have you seen Cars 3 yet? If you did, the Pixar short before it started was Lou. It is, by far, one of my favorite shorts of all time. I found myself giggling like my kids do watching it!
When a toy-stealing bully ruins recess for a playground full of kids, only one thing stands in his way: the “Lost and Found” box. Here’s a small clip for you to enjoy:
We got to interview Director Dave Mullins & Producer Dana Murray about Lou. From that interview, we learned so much, but here are some facts that I think you’ll enjoy:
- Dave Mullins had been pitching shorts to Pixar since 2005. It took him 4 years to make Lou.
- His wife and him built an actual “Lou”.
- When Dave pitched this idea to John Lasseter, he said that it looked like a pain to do, so we have to do this!
- Lou is animated by hand. (All the animators are Dave’s best friends now ROFL).
- When you see JJ in the movie, that’s Dave’s mom’s initials (Joyce Jean).
- They used a kid from Inside Out to make JJ.
- They borrowed kids from Finding Dory for the playground scenes.
- The toys that are in the lost in found box are “timeless” toys.
- There are definite references to other films like ET in here.
- The “For Dad” at the end is for Dave’s dad who passed away.
- Lou is the only thing that is red in the film, because red pops and is visually easy to track.
- He still owns his Henry doll.
I hope you enjoy Lou as much as I did! Go head out and see Cars 3 right now!

LOU was adorable!!! I was at DSMMC earlier this year when we got a sneak peek and I instantly fell in love. Dave Mullins was so great to listen to about his creation as well–so cute!

Having animated shorts is a good idea. They can generate interest and also test some new ideas. Lou looks like a nice short film.
fun facts are always … FUN! loved getting to know a little more about Lou and how it was created… Now I’ll have an even more appreciation for the short film when I see it : )
We can’t wait to see the new Cars movie! My kids keep asking and asking! It is on our summer bucket list for sure!
The Cars movies are always fun to watch! This is awesome and it sounds like they have another exciting story once again. I can’t wait to see the characters and watch the story unfold as well. Tt’s sad to hear about McQueen will crash on this movie! I think I’ve watched Cars movies too many times because of haha! I will definitely love this also!
I can’t wait to see LOU and Cars 3 with my son. They both look so good and it’s summer, time for movies on hot days.
How funny! I love those shorts. I’ve found them to be some of the most creative productions an most have zero dialogue, yet you get so much out of it.
Nice! I love Inside Out and Finding Dory and knowing that they took some inspiration from those movies makes me excited to watch this video.
I thought that Lou was such an adorable and smart animated short. My boys, however, were so anxious to see Lightning McQueen that they were so mad that the short film played before hand. Ha!
I haven’t gotten to see it yet! That is so cool. The story behind Lou makes me even more excited to see this movie’s short!
The Pixar short film Lou looks like it is a good one. I can’ believe it was animated by hand. OMG. how labor intensive that is! Thanks for the trivia about LOU.
Oh wow, I think it’s amazing that they built an actual Lou. What a fun interview and now I know all 12 facts.
