Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

When I was in LA in July, I was lucky enough to see this film. Now, if you know me, I’m pretty picky on my film choices. This one I thought for sure was going to fall into the “I’m only watching it for the kids” movies. I like Steve Carell, but I’m not a fan of silly, stupid humor. That’s why I was surprised to find out that I really, really, really liked Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

I remember reading Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day to my kids. Granted, the book is just the first stepping stone into this movie. We can all relate to just having the most terrible day in our lives.  However, most likely, your very bad day does not equal this family’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.  I have to say that I did enjoy the comedy in this movie too.  It wasn’t dumb humor — there were reasons for all the jokes and it made sense (yes, I watch movies in a logical fashion.  I can’t help it which is why its hard for me to find a good comedy movie that I actually like.  I overthink it.  I know.).  The casting was excellent.  I love Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell and her make the perfect pair.

The movie is great.  I can only recommend it.  I loved it and I know my kids are going to love it too!  It’s got a great story line and lots of laughs!

  1. I didn’t think my son would enjoy this movie but he surprised me the other day asking me to take him to see it. Says that he can relate to kid in the movie. That is so funny since he is only 7. This will be a family movie night to take him.

  2. My kids always loved this book, but I was skeptical of the movie. I’m glad I read your review, because now I actually want to see it!

  3. We were supposed to go to the premiere the other night and couldn’t make it. So bummed! Have to plan on this weekend for sure!

  4. I am really looking forward to seeing this movie along with my family. My daughter has already planned for us to go on Columbus day since they are out of school.

  5. Too funny. I referenced this book a couple weeks ago when I was in the midst of a terrible, no good, very bad day – but I had no idea it was being turned into a movie. Now I need to see this. – Katy

  6. I’m glad I read your review because honestly I wondered how silly it would be and if I would like it. I guess when it comes out on DVD I will be renting it. It does look really funny but I wasn’t sure how I’d feel as an adult. I do love Garner though and have definitely had very bad days.

  7. Yes, I’ve had some days that were: Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad… But, this looks perfectly funny and great for the entire family. The pictures capture what I’m assuming will be a hilarious experience. I think my kids will really enjoy it!

  8. I guess this can be a case of “bad associations spoil useful habits”, but I wasn’t a fan of silly, stupid humor either. Then I met my husband. He made me, MADE ME watch movies like Tommy Boy and Dumb and Dumber. Even though I thought they were totally asinine then I think they’re hilarious now. I can only imagine this is much better.
