The BFG

Hey friends, The BFG recently visited Chicago, so we should go see him in the theaters! The BFG opens today, and I can tell you that it is a must see movie this summer!  Throughout this review, I am going to be sprinkling some must watch You Tube videos about this movie that you must watch (just like the dreams The BFG catches!)image009

What is The BFG?  First of all, it stands for Big Friendly Giant, and The BFG tells the story of a young girl and the giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country!  Standing 24- feet tall with enormous ears, the BFG even has his own language. His brothers are twice as big, twice as scary, and eat humans. At first, Sophie is scared, but she realizes that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming.  She learns that he is dream catcher.  However, the other giants learn that she is there, and they must concoct a plan to keep her and BFG safe!

It is a story of overcoming all obstacles and digging deep to help your friend.  It is also a story of growing older and having to leave.

You do not have to read The BFG to enjoy the movie.  The movie doesn’t follow the book (the giants have a bigger part, Mary isn’t a maid in the movie, etc).

The film stars three-time Tony Award®, two-time Olivier Award and Oscar® winner Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant; newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, the orphan who befriends him and is swept into a world of rampaging giants; Penelope Wilton as The Queen; Jemaine Clement as Fleshlumpeater, the most fearsome giant from Giant Country; Rebecca Hall as Mary, The Queen’s handmaid; Rafe Spall as Mr. Tibbs, The Queen’s butler; and Bill Hader as Bloodbottler, another unruly giant from Giant Country.image010

I loved it so much, I’ve seen it twice already.  The visual effects are so absolutely amazing.  You easily get drawn into this world of giants and can believe it is real.  The 3D movie is absolutely amazing in its detail.  It is a great story brought to life, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have.

  1. okay, so I have to be honest, this was not a movie that I was interested in seeing, but I have been hearing some okay reviews on it, so I will have to go and give it a chance.

  2. Lucky you seeing this twice already. The kids are so ready to see the big friendly giant and I have to admit that I am as well. I love movies like this and enjoy taking the grand kids to see them.

  3. This sounds like such a good movie. My one daughter has been talking about it quite often. We can’t wait to check it out!

  4. I saw a preview for BFG the other day when I was at the theater and it looks like a great movie. I’ll have to schedule a movie date this month so I can go see it with my husband.

  5. THis is one of those movies where I read the book so many times as a kid that I can hardly stand myself waiting to see the movie to see how it all translates on to the big screen. So excited!!!
