How to ask for help . . .

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Something we have been struggling with is if Will is behind in his speaking.  I’ve talked about it on Twitter and to my friends, but not on here yet.  We definitely know he is behind.  I mean we aren’t expecting him to say “hey mom, take me to a musical instrument shop” or “buy electric guitar“. However, he’s only got about 10 – 15 words. He’s two. Depending on where I read, he should have 30 – 50 words.  We aren’t even close to that.

It’s hard.  Madison was always ahead of her milestones.  She also talked early and a lot, so it has been very hard for us to gauge.  The turning point for me is that my mom and Bill’s mom have both mentioned several times to us that he doesn’t talk.  He also does something very odd with his mouth.  You know how Popeye talks out of the side of his mouth.  Will does that a lot.  He also makes that face when he’s not talking.  I can’t tell if it’s a bad habit or if there is a problem.  I do have to add that he is slightly tongue tied, so I don’t know if that has anything to do with it either.

We have a wellness visit set up on July 13th for him (and a school physical for Madison).  I will be definitely asking for a referral for services.  Bill thinks he will grow out of it and catch up.  My thoughts are to get a professional look at him, and let them determine whether we have a problem.

If anybody has any experience with anything like this, I would love to hear your experience.  Any advice would be helpful too!

We’re getting a piano!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

My life long dream has been to learn how to play piano.  I know, it sounds crazy, but it’s one of those things I always wanted to learn to do.  Madison also has this incredible ability to listen to song once and start sing to it.  Granted, she may not be the best singer, but she is definitely picking up the words.  She just seems to have some natural music ability.

I was mentioning this over the weekend to my SIL and MIL that I was thinking about buying a piano for Madison (well, me too).  My SIL said they have one sitting in their garage we could have for free!  Seriously!  We just have to figure out how to move it here, and it’s ours.

Now, Will’s birthday is this weekend, so it won’t be this week.  However, we’ll definitely have one here soon!

Granting Wishes at Sears

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

TThis post is sponsored, but the ideas, thoughts and ramblings are my own.

Since having kids, I turned into a big softie.   Yes, I’ll actually admit it.  I cry at things I never would have before, and I think about things that never would have crossed my mind before having kids.  I’ll be honest here — I get all teary eyed at Sears new commercials.  Their new campaign is about how one gift can change someone’s life.  Since I absolutely love Ty Pennington, I thought I’d show you what he had to say:

Okay, now that I’ve got myself composed again, I need to tell you what wishes Sears answered for my family. I was provided a $100 gift card from Sears that we were able to use this weekend.

Bill and I bundled the kids off early yesterday morning and headed off to Sears.  I luck out since Sears is actually walking distance from my house, and we actually shop their quite a bit — off the top of my head, we got a bench, our snowblower, and our lawnmower from there.  However, on this trip, we had no idea what we were going to get.  My Christmas shopping is pretty much done, so we were going to try to find something for the kids.

The first place we checked out was the outdoor decorations. Madison is always wanting more for our yard, and this isn’t something we spend a lot of money on.  Shortly after this picture was taken, Will decided to lay on the floor and talk to one of the deer that they had for a decoration.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the camera out fast enough to get that embarrassing photo of him.  Nothing really caught our eye in this department, so we headed over to toys.  Of course, there were a lot of toys to pick from, but really, my kids don’t need another $100 worth of toys right before Christmas.  Since the favorite part of any store for my husband is electronics, we headed to that department.

Once we were in electronics, my husband immediately walked towards the TVs even though we really don’t need one. Plus, $100 doesn’t really buy a TV (or at least not the ones he was looking at). Madison was being her normal hyper self running around looking at things until she saw the guitar hero bundle.  Yes, that is my whole family playing Guitar Hero in Sears.  Madison asked us if we could buy her the drums.

Now, the school district I live in has cut the art and music programs from the curriculum and will not be adding them back.  I have written many posts on this blog about how awful I think this situation is and how I feel that music definitely is a class that should not be cut.  My daughter loves to play instruments and sing.  I can’t imagine depriving her of it.  With the $100 Sears gift card, we will be able to fulfill her wish and give her the additional music support she will not be getting from our school.  Who knows — Madison may end up to be  talented singer, dancer, in a band, etc.  However, I’d love to give her the stepping stones she needs to reach her full potential.  (Plus, well, Guitar Hero is fun for mom and dad too.  Dad was all over getting it when I told him there was 3 Tool songs and Freak On A Leash by Korn.  I also need to add that the gift card paid for a portion of the cost of this bundle.  I paid the rest.)

Since we got such an awesome family gift from Sears, I’d like to extend this awesome opportunity to one of my readers.  Yes, I’d like to give you a $100 gift card to Sears to use however you like.

What will you do with your minute?

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

McDonald’s is asking: If you had one minute to help make a difference in your world, what would you do?  For my family, we already do something along the lines of this.  To fight childhood obesity (not that my kids are overweight or anything), we have a minute or so of dance every night in my kitchen.  All of us do this (my hubby and I are included).  The iPod is set to random, and it picks a song.  We all then dance to the song for however long is lasts (now Dave Matthews has a song on there that is around 8 minutes, so that one we end early).  Now, this little thing hopefully allows my children an appreciation of music.  Also, it is a nice workout before we all eat dinner for the evening.

Starting Friday, November 7, the fun continues online at http://www.happymeal.com/ where kids and families can find suggestions for online and offline activities, track their “minutes moved” and enter special codes found on Happy Meal choices of lowfat Milk Jugs and Apple Dippers to enrich the activities on the site. We get lots of Happy Meals here, so we should have a lot of fun with that.

Let me know what you will do with your minute.

Where are they now: Steve Burns

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Anybody who was born in the 90’s or who have had kids in the last ten years knows all about Blue’s Clues.  When it first started, Steve was the one we got to watch on the show with Blue.  However, halfway through its run, he decided to leave.  Due to a fun conversation that took place on Twitter this morning, I was to find out what Steve has been up to.  He left Blue’s Clues to start a music career, and it looks like he did just that.  However, I am glad to see that he still does some kids music too (see second video).

Though I do still find it weird to look at him with facial hair and a bald head. What do you think?
