What Are Chakras?

The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “circle.” In ancient Hindu and yogic traditions, chakras are described as spinning centers of energy located throughout the body. The idea is that life force energy (called prana) flows through these centers, influencing everything from your physical health to your emotions, relationships, and sense of purpose.

There are thought to be hundreds of chakras in the body, but most teachings focus on the seven main ones, which run from the base of your spine up to the top of your head.

The 7 Main Chakras

Each chakra is associated with specific body locations, emotional themes, colors, and elements. Here’s a quick overview:

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Location: Base of the spine

Color: Red

Theme: Safety, security, basic needs, feeling grounded

When balanced: You feel stable, secure, and at home in your body.

When blocked: Anxiety, financial stress, and feeling like the ground is always shifting beneath you.

2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

Location: Just below the navel

Color: Orange

Theme: Creativity, pleasure, emotions, sexuality

When balanced: You feel creative, passionate, and comfortable experiencing joy.

When blocked: Creative blocks, emotional numbness, or feeling disconnected from pleasure.

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Location: Upper abdomen / stomach area

Color: Yellow

Theme: Personal power, confidence, willpower

When balanced: You feel confident, motivated, and in control of your own life.

When blocked:Low self-esteem, indecisiveness, or feeling like a pushover.

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Location: Center of the chest

Color: Green

Theme: Love, compassion, connection, forgiveness

When balanced: You feel open, loving, and able to give and receive affection freely.

When blocked: Difficulty trusting others, holding grudges, or feeling isolated.

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Location: Throat

Color: Blue

Theme: Communication, self-expression, truth

When balanced: You speak your truth clearly and listen with intention.

When blocked: Trouble speaking up, fear of conflict, or difficulty finding the right words.

6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Location: Between the eyebrows

Color: Indigo

Theme: Intuition, insight, imagination

When balanced:  You trust your gut, feel mentally clear, and have a strong sense of direction.

When blocked: Overthinking, self-doubt, or feeling disconnected from your intuition.

7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

Location: Top of the head

Color: Violet or white

Theme: Spiritual connection, higher consciousness, purpose

When balanced: You feel connected to something greater than yourself and at peace.

When blocked: Feeling spiritually lost, disconnected, or like life lacks meaning.

How to Start Working With Your Chakras

You don’t need any special equipment or experience to begin. Here are some simple ways to bring awareness to your energy centers:

  • Meditation: Visualize each chakra’s color glowing brightly as you breathe into that area of the body. Even five minutes can shift how you feel.
  • Yoga: Certain poses are connected to specific chakras – forward folds ground the root chakra, backbends open the heart, and inversions stimulate the crown.
  • Journaling: Reflect on which chakra themes feel most active or stuck in your life right now. The free printable below includes space for exactly this.
  • Crystals and color: Many people like to wear or carry crystals that correspond to the chakra they’re focusing on, or simply surround themselves with that chakra’s color.
  • Sound and music: Each chakra is associated with a specific frequency or “seed mantra” – chanting or listening to these tones can be surprisingly effective.

Signs Your Chakras Might Be Out of Balance

You don’t have to be a yogi to notice when something feels “off.” Common signs that a chakra may need some attention include:

  • Persistent anxiety or fear (root)
  • Creative burnout or emotional flatness (sacral)
  • Chronic self-doubt or people-pleasing (solar plexus)
  • Relationship struggles or loneliness (heart)
  • Difficulty saying no, or feeling misunderstood (throat)
  • Brain fog or second-guessing your instincts (third eye)
  • Feeling purposeless or spiritually adrift (crown)

The good news? Awareness is the first step. Just noticing which of these resonates can tell you a lot about where to focus your energy.
