If you are ever in the San Francisco, the Walt Disney Family Museum is a must stop. I love his quote that I used for my title “It's kind of fun to do the impossible”. This museum highlights all the impossible Walt was able to create his entire life.
When we first walk into The Walt Disney Family Museum, you will see a ton of awards. It is almost overwhelming. Did you know that Walt Disney received over 900 awards? Amazing, I know! The Walt Disney Family Museum houses around 250 of these awards. I took apicture of couple of the awards for you!
The Oscar that Snow White and the Seven Dwarves got made me laugh (notice the little Oscars), so I had to include that picture! Did you know that Disney has the most Oscars compared to anyone else?
There are several galleries throughout the museum. You can easily spend all day here! The first gallery is the beginnings. You learn about Walt's childhood and how he changed his birth date on his papers to join the war before he was old enough. The picture show the ambulance that he drove in World War I.
The next portion of the museum starts with Walt Disney's career. After the war, Walt met Ub Iwerks. They worked together throughout their careers.
In 1923, Walt arrived in Hollywood. The next gallery shows how to set up the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio with his brother Roy. I also included this letter, because how cool is it to see Walt's handwritten letter about his success?
The next gallery is about Oswald and Disney's movement to sound. It also covers the success of Mickey Mouse:
and also covered the marriage to Lilian Bounds. I also loved looking at this storyboard from back in the day:
The success of Walt's cartoons opened up a whole new avenue of animation, art, and character merchandising.
I also loved looking at the technicolor. Honestly, it was one of my most favorite parts!
There is whole gallery on the success of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. That allowed Disney to work on the productions of Bambi, pinocchio, and Fantasia.
The next gallery is something I never even knew about! I had no idea that the Disney workers had gone on strike or that Disney did some propaganda film!
Another portion of the museum that I loved was the miniatures. Even grown up, I find them pretty awesome.
Another favorite gallery has to be Walt's Final Projects. In this room, there is everything from Walt's 1/8 scale model locomotive:
and the best thing was the model of “the Disneyland of Walt's imagination”:
Isn't that so cool? There was even a gallery dedicated to Walt's death.
As you can see, there is just so much to see at The Walt Disney Family Museum. This is just small portion of what you will see there. This place is just as magical as his theme parks and gives you a great understanding of the man.
What part of The Walt Disney Family Museum would you like to see the most?
