Who Can Register to Vote in New Mexico

You qualify for New Mexico voter registration if you meet these requirements:

• You hold U.S. citizenship
• You live in New Mexico
• You turn 18 by Election Day
• No judge has ruled you ineligible to vote
• You aren’t currently serving a prison sentence for a felony conviction (once you complete your sentence, you regain eligibility immediately, even while on parole or probation)

Three Ways to Complete New Mexico Voter Registration

New Mexico offers voters three registration methods, so you can choose whichever fits your schedule best:

• Register online. Visit the New Mexico Secretary of State’s voter portal and submit your registration electronically. You’ll need a valid New Mexico driver’s license or state ID number to complete this option.
• Register by mail. Download and print New Mexico’s registration form or the National Mail Voter Registration Form, fill it out, and mail it to your county clerk. First-time registrants who mail in their form must include a copy of a current, valid photo ID or another approved document, such as a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or student ID, that shows their name and current address. Skip that step, and you’ll simply need to show ID when you vote in person or by absentee ballot instead.
• Register in person. Head to your county clerk’s office, an early voting location, or your assigned polling place. New Mexico also runs an automatic voter registration program: as of July 1, 2025, MVD customers who meet the state’s eligibility requirements get registered to vote automatically when they visit the Motor Vehicle Division. 

Same-Day Registration: New Mexico’s Safety Net

New Mexico stands out for letting residents register and vote on the same day. You can use same-day registration at your county clerk’s office throughout the early voting period, or at any polling location on Election Day itself. To register this way, bring one of the following:

• A New Mexico driver’s license or state ID
• Any document showing your address in the county, paired with photo ID
• A current student photo ID from a New Mexico post-secondary school, along with a student fee statement listing your address

Absentee and Early Voting Options

Once your New Mexico voter registration is confirmed, you gain access to flexible voting options too. New Mexico allows any registered voter to request an absentee ballot without needing an excuse. Early in-person voting runs from October 6 through October 31, 2026, for the general election, giving you plenty of time to cast your ballot before Election Day.
