I need to start this post with about how much I'd love to work with Disney. I actually met Patrick Osborne last year when I was in LA for Guardians of The Galaxy. I was able to watch his amazing short (and I knew back then how amazing his Academy Nominated Short really is!). It was so cool to see him again and watch how difficult it really is to make a short.

Let me rewind a bit though. The reason I would love to work for Disney is that they really foster the creative side of their artists. I bring this up because Disney has an amazing “short” program for all their employees. It is amazing because they ask everyone who works for them to pitch a couple of shorts. The best one they make into a “short”. Seriously, how cool is that?

Patrick Osborne pitched a couple of ideas and his got picked! Osborne joined Walt Disney Animated Studios as an animator on the 2008 feature film “Bolt,” and went on to work on the “Prep & Landing” movies and Disney’s 2010 hit “Tangled.” Osborne served as head of animation for WDAS’ Oscar®-winning short “Paperman,” and acted as co-head of animation for the upcoming feature “Big Hero 6” prior to assuming full-time directing duties for “Feast.” Prior to joining Disney, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native was lead character animator on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” He also worked as an animator on “I Am Legend,” “Surf’s Up” and “Open Season.” Honestly, he is an amazing man to meet.

The original idea for Feast came from pictures that Osborne took of the food he ate every night for a year. He then put all those images together in a movie. (He didn't admit to being a foodie, but I think deep down he is!) That was the starting point for this short. He wanted to make a movie where the story was told through the food.

We actually got to walk through the entire process from concept to creation for Feast. We learned how they animated this movie and how certain decisions were made. Can you believe that it took 51 weeks from the time they were given the go to the final short? It is amazing the amount of work that is put into these short films. It is also amazing how many decisions that need to be made.

For those who haven't seen Big Hero 6 yet (Feast is the short before the movie), here is the trailer:

It is amazing how a short like Feast can bring tears to your eyes. It's also very cool to watch a movie come full circle. Here's a few tidbits you may need for one of those trivia games:

  • The wedding dress in this short was modeled after his own wife’s dress.
  • Originally, the dog died in the end. Let me say I'm glad they reworked the ending!
  • They brought in real dogs to learn their mannerisms and facial expressions.
  • They used an animation tool called “Meander” on Feast which makes the 2-D & 3-D animation work better together
  • They added dust particles to make the scenes look more real. Who would have thought we needed more dust in our lives?
  • Right now, Osborne doesn't have a dog! However, he has been a lovable dog owner in the past.

What would you ask Patrick Osborne if given the chance? Have you seen Feast yet? Did you learn anything about this short if you have seen it?
